But seriously, there are so many different types and styles of settings it''s hard to know where to even begin. My intended has told me that she doesn''t like the "tiffany-style" setting where the diamond sits up high above the ring but that still leaves a lot of options. Also, she doesn''t like settings that are wide, very detailed, or showy. Obviously we need to go look at settings at a B&M, but does anyone have any suggestions on how to narrow down things a bit. She has trouble deciding on what to order at a restaurant so you can imagine how difficult this decision will probably be. I told her that if she hasn''t decided in six months, I''m just going to go and pick something out.

You''re on the right track with planning to embark on a field trip to the local jewelers! If there is one thing that I''ve learned, women like choices. Take "the closet" for instance, the odds are that her closet is "full of clothes" and yet "she has nothing to wear". Confusing to us guys, truly.

Try to narrow the options down to 3 - 4 that she really likes and then select one of those when you buy the diamond "so that she can be surprised".

Before you go out to the B&Ms and get frustrated, let her see the SMTR top thread, where ALL the rings are listed from everyone who''s ever posted a ring on PS. Let her note down the ones that speak to her and what she loves about each one...Like, "I love a halo, but one that''s channel set, not prong set" "I love a halo that''s at the same level as the center stone, not set below it" "I love a round center with pear side stones", etc. THEN, go to the B&Ms and try on similar styles to see which look best on her actual hand. If you dont want her to know how to get to the PS site, just put a piece of black paper over the URL site address at the top, and then clear out the history on your PC (is you share a pc) so she cant find her want her again!

the first thing that came too my mind from the description is an x-prong type setting.
They are available from many sources, do a search for x-prong here and show her some pictures.

How about spending the majority of the money on the stone and just putting the stone in a $150 temporary setting and propose with that ring? Tell her that you want her to have the setting she likes and pick out the setting together after you propose. It can be really fun to pick out the settings together and she might really appreciate that you are letting her pick out what she would like, but you still put the time and effort into picking out a beautiful stone.

I''d suggest a classic three stone engagement ring.

Any three stone setting by Leon Mage will be low profile and knock your socks off stunning. If you don''t want to go with Leon I''d go with Vatche if you are talking a round with pears or baguettes. If you want a fancy like an Oval with Half Moon sides (my personal favorite) I''d go with Leon.

There is rarely a person with classic tastes that dislikes a low profile three stone engagement ring.

I like this suggestion the best as a starter. Let her look and get a feel for what she wants to see in person. That will cut out a lot of, not wasted time, but time spent on things she doesn''t like.

And strm, I was kinda thinking x-prong, til he said she doesn''t like wide. Not sure if there are narrower ones?
