A few days I posted about upgrading my current studs and a few of you responded that the jeweler's price was low. So I had my husband check and sure enough he quoted a price for uncert'd stones. Here's the next question (actually my husband's since he's writing the check

) - Is it possible to have our jeweler pick stones and have our appraiser check them for the color, clarity and cut that we want? And end up with a good pair of studs? Oh, and I should add that both the jeweler and appraiser are GIA grads.

To be honest, I've been throwing some strong hints that I want a RHR that I fell in love with recently - half and enternity band made up of seven .3 ct each Hearts On Fire stones. So I'm trying to figure out a way to cut costs.

So back to the original issue of trying to stick to a budget (don't you just hate the word?). Is he making a big mistake buying stones that aren't certified?

Kelly, it is possible for your jeweller and appraiser to come up with some decent stones for you, but depending on their beliefs and abilities, you may end up losing on all important cut. Again so important in stones used for earrings. The jewellers/appraisers and preferences of what makes a great cut might completely differ and not actually work for you as the wearer.

I think buying diamonds without a grading report is ok if you are absolutely without a shadow of a doubt sure, that you won''t ever want to sell them. A GIA or AGS report makes reselling or trading easier, without can be almost impossible. So it depends on whether it would be a mistake personally. All diamonds are generally easier to sell with a grading report, you have to ask why these diamonds don''t have a report as they would sell for considerably more money with than without.

Lorelei - Let me first tell you how cute your avatar is! And thank you for responding to my post a few days ago. These stones will never be sold. If anything I would trade up for yet something else with the same jeweler or my niece will inherit them. I remember doing research for my engagement ring and if I''m not mistaken doesn''t GIA use a certain formula of percentages and angles to measure cut? Would a good appraiser be able to do that via proper equipment?

I do understand what you are saying and cut is the big question.

BTW, thanks in advance to anyone else who chimes in.

Hehehe... thanks Kelly! Yes GIA use angles to measure crown and pavillion angles, these are often rounded though with the new GIA cut grades, so if your jeweller could run a Sarin Report on the diamonds, that would help to get the actual measurements. One thing you could do, is to order an Idealscope, you can check each diamond you encounter for cut quality quite easily, this might be really useful for you, so I will post a link for you. I think it depends on the appraiser and what you want from the appraisal as to how in depth it goes, you would have to be specific that you would like the cut quality analysed and therefore light performance. If the diamonds aren't ever sold then ungraded might be ok to get increased size if the price is right, make sure your jeweller allows a lifetime trade though and get it in writing in case.

Here you go Kelly - https://www.pricescope.com/idealscope_indx.asp
