Stone to be recut...maybe?

Hi All

I have a 5ct 10mm round peridot. I love it, the color is very nice (a little yellow there but thats ok)

but wondering if I should recut? It does have a smallish window that I don''t like

Here is is inside, no flash, natural light.

The window appears to be quite small and the rest of the cutting looks decent. I would leave it alone because once set, the window will close or disappear. if you want to verify if the window will go away, put the stone in between 2 fingers on the back of your hand. If all you see is the colour (no dead zones where skin can be seen), you're all set.

Here it is in sunlight, no flash. You can see more of the yellow here (which I''m ok with) but you can also see that window more.

but I''m looking for some direction on this. Someday I''d like to set it into something.

Have you put it on the back of your hand, between 2 fingers? That will simulate the stone already set in a setting which minimizes the window. LD did this Houdini trick with one of the gemstones that has a window the size of a door and it works.

Thanks Chrono. I can''t see any skin which on me is great. I''m brown so that helps a lot. I doubt I''d set it into a ring as it would look like a big ol crazy thing on my hand, but I have considered a necklace with a decent halo around it.

In that case, I''d definitely leave the stone alone. It looks good as it is with a very bright colour outdoors.

The cutting on that stone looks lovely, and once it''s set, I bet that window would disappear.

I''ll save the money on what a recut would cost and just get a kick ass setting!

Recuts are not cheap, sometimes they can cost more than the stone itself, so that''s also something to consider for anyone considering recutting a stone. I know that one cutter charges $150/hr, and I think that''s the typical going rate.

I had asked around here I''ve gotten prices 75/hr and up depending where I called. Still though, thats enough to give me pause and ask. I have some stones that will never be recut though they could certainly use them, but they''re not valued at much so it wouldn''t be worth bothering.


the window still bothers me a bit, mainly because I love this stone, but maybe after I actually set it in something it wont. I don''t know what color I''m going to even set it in

I don''t see a window in that stone at all face on. Are you sure it''s not a tilt window ( a window that can only be viewed if the stone if not viewed straight on)? If it''s a tilt window, not much can be done, especially in some lower RI stones. The important thing is that it has no window when your line of sight is exactly perpendicular to the stone''s table.

When you look at it straight on you do see it, except its to the side and not dead center (does that make sense??)

I put it on my hand (and tried to take pics...that was laughable) and the window nearly closes all the way. I''m pretty tan so that may also have helped too. In sunlight though the window is very visible even on my hand, but not much in incandescent lighting.

I think the stone is lovely and I could not see a window. It is too beautiful to mess with and like TL said a recut could get expensive..........and then you may take a chance an not like it at all.

I would not recut either- the window is so small! Not worth the risk.
