I think a good upgrade policy is important. Why? After you guys have paid your dues and you are making a larger salary as an established doctor you guys can upgrade to her dream size.

I would ASK for any sort of discount that might apply, say" referral " or "preferred members" discount. The specifically don't have a "pricescope" discount anymore but id be a little persistent an ask if they have anything.

I just purchased a stone from James Allen this week and asked for the Pricescope discount and was given a discount. So I can't say that a particular Pricescope discount is available, but asking for it certainly got me some kind of discount, whatever they call it. So yes, do ask.

Honestly if 10k is your budget and she is a size/ brand conscious (nothing wrong with that so am I), then put EVERYTHING you have into the diamond with a classic and simple solitaire temp setting. On your 1 year anniversary make a date and have her pick out the setting of her dreams. I think that is more then reasonable. Also if she really wants to hit the 2ct marker buy from someplace that has an EXCELLENT upgrade policy (for example not something where you have to spend 2x the original purchase price). Since I got married 8 years ago we have upgraded my diamond and setting a few times. It would have saved us thousands had I found PS and followed this sage advise plus just had a more frank and honest conversation with my DH on expectations.
