I inherited a beautiful antique ring with a basket setting. The stone is small, 1/3, carat, old miners cut, supposedly a good quality, however, it only gives off white light, no colored light.

Is this due to being in a basket?

Thanks.

is it clean?
Try looking at it in a darkish room with very few very small lights (an elevator?)

Bring the stone in to the jeweller''s for a good cleaning then check it out in their show room lighting and something akin to candlelight.

Thanks oh-knowledgable-pricescopers. I''ve had it professionally cleaned and I also clean it often. Still, bascially, just white light. It''s an interesting old diamond but not valuable enough to have professionally evaluated. So, you don''t think it''s because it''s in a basket?

Thanks for the help & happy hollidays.

Sure it''s a diamond? A white sapphire would give off only white light...

Oooo, interesting. I''ve had about 4-5 jewelers look at it. They have all basically said - H color, SI1, old miners but no mention of anything else. I''m thinking they would have caught that.

Thanks all ! !

I''m betting you haven''t had it in the right light yet. But it is not due to the basket.

It cannot be the basket. I have an old european cut diamond totally covered up in a bezel and it flashes all sorts of colours.
