Still Searching...Local Stone vs Online Stones?

At this point, I'm stuck.

My local jeweler brought in a 2.02 carat F SI1 (eye clean..I've seen it in person) that he says is hearts and arrows. Now, the lab used was EGL. That worries me. It does look nice in person but I've never seen a true ideal cut before. He only wants $15,300 for it.

Obviously, I can't come close to that online. I'm thinking it's so cheap because of the EGL grading? Or? It just seems too good to be true.

I am really after a super ideal cut with lots of sparkle. Color doesn't matter as long as it is I or better. Clarity doesn't matter as long as it is eye clean.

Thoughts? It's between that stone, and these ones (or any other suggestions?)

I'm assuming these online stones will all have a better cut and therefore better "sparkle"? Help!!!

Anyone have any thoughts or advice? It would be greatly appreciated.

If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

You don't know what you're actually getting with a EGL. Seriously, you could could potentially be looking at a J I1, if it were graded by GIA or AGS. Would you pay $15,000 for that? You can get a GIA certified 2 Ct GIA XXX I SI2 for less than $15,000. PriceScope has a great tool to do comparison work https://www.pricescope.com/diamond-prices/round . From my readings here and other blogs about the value of EGL, it's fair to assume that EGL has bumped at least 1 color and 1 clarity.

You don't know what you're actually getting, and even if you truly knew what you were getting, you'd also find it's not a good deal.

Regarding the vendor's claim of HA, Hearts and Arrows is icing on the cake of a well-proportioned ideal cut. Do you have the pav, crown, table, depth?

Thank you. I suspected as much. I called in to get the info on that EGL diamond.

Table: 57%
Depth: 63.6%
Pavillion: 43%
Crown: 17%

And it scores just a 3.2 on the HCA tool. I can't imagine a true hearts and arrows scoring that poorly, right?

I am getting the feeling I really need to stick to reputable companies online where they have real information from top quality labs like GIA and AGS. Thoughts?

Hi clueless1985! :wavey:

You were absolutely right to question this. :errrr: This doesn't sound right AT. ALL. Do NOT do business with this jeweler. Either he's scamming you, or he doesn't know what he's doing (I don't know which is worse). :nono:

On a much more positive note... If you start a thread and list your budget and specs, the experts on here are really great about helping out! :))

Different grading labs and companies have different criteria for what makes a hearts and arrows diamond. Just because it meets the definition of whoever is selling it to you does not mean it meets your criteria or the criteria that is generally assumed to be met by an h&a diamond.

The specs you posted point towards than a higher depth than most would recommend here. Just to give you some perspective, the following thread shows round brilliant depths of 67.7% and almost 70% with "H&A" on the EGL cert. Most anyone who knows anything about diamonds wouldn't touch these with a 10 ft pole with those depths. Somehow Hearts and Arrows is designated, and who even knows if they're a good example, there's no universal grading standard for Hearts and Arrows symmetry.
