Nice...I can''t say I have a cleaner that I love as I have not yet inherited any of my own grandma''s silver, but will be watching this thread to see what others recommend as far as products to clean silver.

I was brought up using Wrights (the cream, haven''t tried the anti-tanish stuff).

Here''s an informative link.

The best thing to do is keep it from getting too bad in the first place. I have battled this for years, as humid areas are the worst, and I live on a river. I can polish something and if it''s not wrapped up, or at least in an enclosed cabinet, tarnish will be showing within a week.

Your area may not be that bad, you''ll just have to see.

Whatcha getting??

fine old silver pieces...

Monnie, my grandmother FINALLY agreed to move to an assisted living community (she just cannot take care of herself any longer). She broke her arm and didn''t tell anyone for 3 days!

Anyways, she is 87 and I guess actually adjusting well. Eating regular meals AND making friends. My mom and aunt are going through her condo and getting rid of most everything. I guess she has enough silver to be split with her 5 grandchildren.

Ellen, I have no idea what it looks like, how many pieces, or what kind of pieces! My mom is going to ship it to me. All she said was I better buy silver cleaner so I am guessing it will need some heavy duty cleaning. What do you wrap your pieces in?

I am also getting a diamond and ruby watch (I guess my wrist is the smallest so I won by default). My mom is convinced it isn''t my style but I will cherish it no matter what it looks like. My grandfather gave it to her in 1943 for their 1 year wedding anni

So sweet! She is going to bring it next month when she comes down to help me with the baby.

Aww, bless her heart.

I''m glad to hear she is adjusting, as it IS a big adjustment for them.

At present, they are wrapped in plastic wrap. I''ve heard that''s not so good for it, but honestly, my mom had done that all her life, and so have I, and I honestly don''t see the harm. And some of these pieces are very old. However, I think there are soft cloth storage bags made for this, that you can buy on the market.

Ellen I actually forwarded my mom the thread about taking care of an elderly parent. She said it was very helpful. My grandma constantly makes her the bad guy. I guess it is hard to lose your independence. However she no longer drove so she spent SOOO much time alone. She would forget to pay her bills. It is close to impossible to talk to her on the phone (she can''t hear well). She never wore her life alert button. She would forget to eat. She will be healthier physically and emotionally. I guess already she looks better. Now if only we can convince her to wear her hearing aid!

Yes, it is REALLY hard to lose ones independance. I don't look forward to it myself...I'm glad she found it helpful, that was my intent.

As for the hearing aids and not wearing them, she isn't the only one. Many find while they help in some situations, they hinder in others. While amplifying a single voice helps, being in a place with more noise, just amplifies ALL the things making the noise(s) and everything gets jumbled. This is particularly prominant in older models.

However, mom and I just recently went shopping for them for her, she's never had any, and there are some on the market now that self adjust to noises and different situations. Might try that if you think that may be the problem.

Or, she just may be forgetting to put them on.

I''ve used Connoisseurs Silver Jewelry Cleaner. It works well but kinda stinks.

Any idea for serving pieces? It would take a LONG time to clean this stuff with connoisseurs

LOL! Oops, I obviously didn''t read your post correctly! I would NOT recommend using jewelry cleaner on serving pieces!

Sorry, I don''t have any good suggestions.

I''ve used a few different cleaners to remove tarnish from silver. The one I liked best is a liquid called TARN-X. I also place a piece of white chaulk with the silver as this absorbs moisture and prevents tarnishing.

Thanks RC for the tips! Do you store your silver in a special bag with the chalk or just place a piece on top?

I have it both ways. You can either place a piece of chaulk inside the cabinet or drawer where the silver is stored or place it inside of a plastic ziploc bag along with the silver.
