Steps of a Proposal

Hi Folks,

can anyone suggest the correct or proper steps I should take when proposing? I am confused whether to put the ring on her finger before or after she says yes or before/after i pop the question.

1)pre-proposal speech
2)pull out craftily hidden ring box
3)Get down on bended knee
4)open ring box
5)ask the question
6)if "yes" is the answer place ring on finger

or

1)pre-proposal speech

4)open ring box (pause here?)
5)put ring on her finger and ask question

What is the most traditional way of doing things?

I would say put the ring on after she says yes.
