Hi,

I saw the emerald cut stone again today. It''s really pretty. I took it outside and thought, ''wow, it''s really a blue/white stone''. It''s like a peice of ice.

Again, this notion of an emerald cut is very new to me. Here is the GIA report:

Measurements: 8.73 x 6.92 x 4.28 mm
Weight: 2.28 ct

Proportions:
Depth 61.8 %
Table 72 %
Girdle Thin
Culet None

Finish:
Polish Good
Symmetry Very Good

Clarity VS1
Color F
Flourescence Faint

To me it looks like a very pretty stone. It''s set, though, so I can''t see it loose.

So, is this a good report? He has given a price of $22,500. Is this reasonable? Can I negotiate further? It''s already in his inventory, so it''s not like he''s called it in the way I might ask to see some oval stones. I am thinking oval or emerald cuts. I should decide on the cut I really want, I guess.

There is something really wonderful about this stone. It''s big, clean and icy clear to my eyes.

Also it looks good on my hand. :)

But it''s pricey. I have an independent looking for oval stones and my husband saw the one I liked at about $14,500 so it''s quite a jump from there to $22,500. But this is a superior stone. This is at a local, independent brick and mortar jeweler, a neighborbood jeweler of 30 years. I can probably get a better price from my independent source.

Anyway, your fine thoughts are welcomed!

and thanks.

First you need to decide what you want and then start from there. Do you your homework on both the EMERALD and OVAL cut diamonds here on PS. You are spending a great deal of money on these two cuts of diamonds.

Reseach on here what the correct dimensions are for each cut. Find them, WRITE THEM DOWN and start seaching for the diamonds that fall into that range.

That''s good advice and what I have been doing. I think I know what I want as far as dimensions go for either the emerald cut or the oval cut. I know they are two, very different kinds of diamonds. Is it reasonable to ask a jeweler or independent to show me several of each so I can decide, or would it be more considerate of their time to simply cruise the mall stores, looking at real stones, decide on the shape I really want and go from there??

How does the ''table'' size actually affect an emerald''s facets, brilliance, etc? It seems the stone I''m looking at has a large table. Does that matter? I''ve read and read about it all but I still feel somewhat confused. The depth of the stone I''m looking at...is it deep enough to show the facets? Too deep or shallow? Am I being too anal about it all?! It''s sooo much money, that''s the scary part. Can''t make a mistake. My husband is going along with this reluctantly and I''m not sure he''ll go for a stone that costs $22,500. It''s half the cost of a new kitchen and cost more than my car! Maybe it''s totally stupid and unreasonable of me to even be thinking this $big$.

I have an independent who can probably get me a good stone at a better price. When I''ve compared the emerald cuts from various internet sites with the stone I''m looking at, the certification is comparable, stats, etc., well, his price of $22,500 seems about right.

I know this is a boring thread, and y''all have been down this road with other newbies before. Any advice is hungrily appreciated, though!
