Dare I ask if anyone who has seen this would summarize? Or point to a source if already done so online?

For those who are really into this and who can sit through a 94 minute presentation, here's the skinny, straight from the horses mouth .... Martin Rapaport. It's not for casual observers but if you're interested in what's going on over on the other side of the counter, here it is.

http://www.diamonds.net/News/NewsItem.aspx?ArticleID=43352&ArticleTitle=Martin%2bRapaports%2bState%2bof%2bthe%2bDiamond%2bIndustry%2bPresentation%2bat%2bJCK%2bVegas

Happy listening.

Add value or perish.

I tried I really tried I was able to put in 5 minutes before my head started bobbing lol

Thanks Neil. It was quite informative, a bit daunting if you're in the industry in the U.S., and slightly encouraging if you're a baby boomer with diamonds to sell.

And there's the summary :naughty:

A quick off-topic question - Mr. Beaty, were at the PS GTG? If so I must have missed you.

Nope, unfortunately I couldn't make it this year. I had important family obligations and cut short on the show. I heard it was a blast from friends who were able to attend.

Hi,

I do think those of you that have a chunk of time and wish to hear Mr. Rappaport on the future of the diamond industry should watch with your morning coffee. He explains with mucho graphs the supply and demand of both rough and polished diamonds and what it means for prices. One fact that he gives is that there are 500,000 diamond cutters in India vs 2,000 in Israel. He believes that rough diamonds have been held off the market to create the price increases and because of low interest rates and cheap money the India market has created a false value that is not sustainable. He explains everything so well.

He wants the US market to enter the business of buying recycled diamonds from the 70-80 yr olds to sell to the 18-30 r olds as a way of breaking free from the hold of the rough diamond miners.

He likes branding and suggest that retailers not carry others brands to sell for them, but to create their own to add value to their own business.

I thought the talk was terrific. Did you know some labs were using grading of F+, or G- ?

He speaks of China demand, India demand and of course the US.

Annette

And of course, thanks to Neil for linking it.
