Hello all! I first have to say thank you for all of the information that I have learned so far from the experts here. I feel like such a dunce that I never knew the importance of cut until recently. My SO and I have been together for 2.5 years and I would love to be married like yesterday

but I am patiently (I think) waiting. We have spoken about getting married and he knows how much I love diamonds. I am totally addicted to pricescope. He said that he would let me be included in the ring decision. Last night I was asking him what he thought was a reasonable amount to spend on a ring and he told me that it was more important that I get what I want rather than concentrate on price. Sure... ! My thought is around 10k for the total ring which leaves about 8k for the diamond. I have my heart set on the Mark Morrell petite torchiere.

My specifications are:
So, I know that I want a round brilliant diamond. I love the ideal cut diamonds that I have seen!
Between 1.4 - 1.75 carats.
Clarity: VS1-SI1 (I know this is a big range, but I am fine with eyeclean)
Color: E-H (I have become more iffy on color the more I learn on pricescope)

What do you think is the best bang for my buck? Thanks in advance for any discussion and comments. I look forward to hearing what everyone has to say.

Have you used the pricescope search engine for diamonds to see what you could get for around $8k?

I did a quick search and it appears for $8k that you are in the G/H VS2/SI1 1.25ish range?

Enter your numbers above and see what you come up with. If you do a search for in-house diamonds,
Good old gold and whiteflash both have pictures you can look at of the diamonds.

TyTy333: Thanks for the info. Is there a way to increase carat size without going up in price? What do you recommend loosening as far as requirements go?

To get the biggest size for the price, look for the lowest color you would consider and then look for eye-clean SI-1 or SI-2 stones (eye-clean SI-1's are easier to find, but SI-2 will save you more.)

If you haven't checked out this video on diamond color yet, I would highly recommend it. After viewing, you should have a better idea of how color sensitive you are and what colors you would be comfortable with.

Ditto Jet, also compare some in person to see where your colour preferences lie. If you have a Jareds near you check out their AGS0 cut grade diamonds, alternatively Hearts on Fire - with a great cut you might find I or even J colour is fine for you and can maximise the budget.

How about this? Slightly shy of 1.4c H SI1. Ask JA for an IS and check for eye-clean. 7k wire & PS discount.

This looks interesting too, but over budget I think. 8.7k wire & PS discount.

Or this, slightly nearer to your budget if you don't mind VSB fluor. Ask JA if it look oily/hazy. $8.3k wire & PS discount.

jetsks thanks for the video link! It was great.

Lorelei I live four hours from the nearest reasonable B&M store which stinks! I think I could swing an I based on the video. I would love to see something in person in actual daylight but I doubt that''s possible.

H/SI would still be plenty white/clear and this should get you close to that range you are hoping for. I have an H/SI2 and it''s very white and clean. I actually recently purchased and I/I1 and it looks pretty much the same as well... As long as the cut is killer H/SI is a very safe range at this carat weight.

Great suggestions. They look right up my alley. Unfortunately the second one from James Allen was already sold when I viewed it! Thanks-Ana

After discussion with my SO he has decided it has to be 1.5+ (But doesn''t want to spend the money!) I have looked online all morning at various options but wanted an experts opinion. I found a 1.43 from GOG that I really like, but we''ll see.

So, narrowing down:
1.5+
Great cut (preferably ideal)
VS2-SI2
G-I (what do you think of J?)

Thanks for any input/suggestions...

Can you post the details for the GOG diamond please Ana so we can take a look? A J colour is plenty white to me and can help the budget, also if you work with GOG Jon might be able to do a video if he has time to show the J colour.

There was a 1.6 that I looked at last night but I just think it is out of the price range. Here are it''s specs:

My concern with this stone is that there is an inclusion smack in the middle of the beauty. I sent an email asking if it was visible without a loupe and am waiting to here back. Here is the link:

http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/5895/

What do you think?

Both looks good. No way to tell about the inclusion, only GOG can tell if it is eye-clean.

Try this one? Ask JA for an IS.

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1139464.asp

This one might have obstruction issue, but ask for IS to confirm.
http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-VS1-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1237758.asp
Stone-cold11 I requested the IS's. I like the VS1, what obstruction issue do you mean?
Thanks!
Obstruction can be seen with some shallower proportioned diamonds where the diamond can visibly darken at close observation due to the obstruction of the viewers head/ body blocking light to the diamond. The diamond above has borderline angles where obstruction may or may not be an issue so best to ask the vendor to check for this, however opinions vary on obstruction and its effects so in some cases even if a diamond does show this effect ( and the diamond in this case might not show it), it needn't always be a deal breaker.

There is a video on the lower right of this page which demonstrates obstruction so you know what to look for.

Thanks for the info. I understand now what you mean. So I can just ask the vendor to check for this? Will do!

Ditto what Lorelei said. Did not notice your post until now. :P

Here is the response from GOG:
The stone is good for an SI2 but once
you locate it, it is not something I would call eye clean at all angles.
This diamond is at a nice value but the inclusion would probably bother some
people. If you were local it would be worth it to stop by and take a look.

Bummer. I don''t live nearby. What do you all think?

What do you think Ana? That is what matters, if you think it would bother you then maybe this isn't the one.

Lorelei
I think it''s really pretty! I will have to see what my SO thinks about it, but I don''t think it would bother me. It would be like an identifier for me.
Ana

Sarah from GOG said they would make a video of the diamond for me tomorrow as they are doing videos. How incredible!!!!!!!!!
