So I''ve been reading and reading and reading on this forum for about a week now and the information here is priceless. I''m obviously no diamond expert, but I think I know as much (or more) than most of the people who work at the local B&M stores already!

So... what I''m looking for is a classic setting, something that is fairly simple. I''m hoping to get about a 1ct. (maybe slightly undersized .90-.99) round brilliant stone for the center stone. From what I''ve seen so far, I think I''m looking for a H&A or AGS0 Ideal cut, I or better color, and eye clean (probably SI1 or better).

Here are some settings that I like:

I may also go with a traditional tiffany style setting solitaire, but at first, I''d like to try and find something with a bit more going on :)

Any help with finding THE center stone or any similar settings would be appreciated. I was going to try and buy locally, but I doubt that''s going to happen. I do have one last hope for that, as I''m meeting with a local jeweler tomorrow morning who was referred to me by a friend.

I LOVE #2 also 3 is good

Love #1. The simplicity of the setting and the pave. Pave catches every photon of light and returns it cheerfully. #3 very nice too. Don''t care for #2.

Love #1 too. Love your description too gemgaga! Happy little diamonds, doin'' their job!

Alright, thanks for the comments so far. The jeweler that I met with was very helpful, and he actually had GIA certified diamonds, so I could see the cert and the diamond as to get a better idea about the 4 C''s firsthand :)

So, I still like all of the settings that I posted above. One thing I''ve learned is to make sure that it will be easy to find a matching wedding band, so some of the more curvy settings may not be the best idea.

That trip also made me decide that I''m looking for a .90-1ct G, SI1 or better stone with excellent cut and at least very good polish and symmetry. I''m also trying to stay under $5000 for a budget (for the stone + setting), so it presents a good challenge :)

I''m sure I''ll be back with more questions soon enough!

If you like, post the proportions for each diamond here, then we can help you find the best ones. We need at least-

depth%
table%
crown angle
pavilion angle
girdle thickness
diameter measurement

Number 1 while I like pave channel set is a little hardier and does not have to be babied as much :).

I know you wanted to stay SI1 or better but at 1 carat I think that''s a tough find in a really well cut stone -- this may not be your cup of tea but I did find this over at GOG -- it''s a 1.01 carat G/I1 but Jonathan''s got it on his lifetime upgrade so my guess would be that it''s brilliantly cut which might make it look more like an SI2. Check it out:

Bank wire price: $3,776.45

http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/3815/

This would give you a little over $1200 for a sweet setting. Anywhoo, just thought I would toss out another option . . .

Good Luck!

For an SI2 you''re better off with a stone like this one that has clear inclusions. I can''t say for certain that it''s eye-clean, but it''s a better candidate for being eye-clean/prongable.

I would ask about this one.

Ohhhhh Mercoledi that first H/SI2 look like it has AWESOME potential!

The first one gives a wonky HCA though; someone else would have to comment on it''s quality. It scores well, but the little x is WAY outside the boxes.

The second one at least scores within GIA ideal and is right on the line for AGS ideal.

All of those seem to be good options. I''ve been looking further at B&M stores trying to decide what I really want for her. I did find a setting that seems great, although I couldn''t figure out who it was made by to find out if I could get it elsewhere. Is it generally best to try and buy the stone and setting from the same vendor? I would think that would be best, a one point source if anything were to go wrong.

Anyways, here''s a picture of the setting... it''s pretty close to #2 in my original post, but maybe somebody here has seen it (or something similar) online.
