starting at what color range GIA ...

add the word FANCY to yellow stones? are there such grade as a "light fancy yellow W-X or Y-Z stone" from GIA lab?

Beyond Z.

For a stone to be deemed Fancy Yellow, it must have more color than the Z master stone.

Just remember, GIA grades Fancy Colors via table-face-up appearance. Thats how dark capes suddenly become RARE!

Here's some more info about GIA grading of fancy color.

Yellow color--to be deemed "fancy yellow," color starts beyond Z in the normal color range (D-Z). K-L-M are considered Faint Yellow, but they are not fancies. Same for N-R (Very Light Yellow) and S-Z (Light Yellow).

Browns are a bit different. Brown diamonds (within D-Z) darker than K color get a word modifier. Faint Brown for K - M, Very Light Brown for N - R, Light Brown for S - Z.

Greys darker than J are graded Faint Grey, Light Grey etc. with no letter grade.

All other colors are graded in the fancy color system depending on hue and intensity.

Great info guys!

On standard Diamond Grading Reports, GIA calls it "Y-Z Range"

On GIA "color origin" reports, GIA calls this grade "Y-Z Range, Light Yellow, Natural Color"
I don't know that this adds to the confusion, as the lighter yellows are less familiar to many diamond people who are very familiar with colorless. I hear diamond dealers calling them "X-Y-Z's


Stones that are graded as light as U-V color can look pretty durn yellow if they are set between a pair of colorless stones for contrast.
No question that the non GIA labs that are known for grading stones in the setting will call W-X color stones 'Fancy Light Yellow"

Great information Erica. The only thing that I would add is that for the other color diamonds (i.e. not yellow, gray, or brown) the fancy color range begins at G, since D-F is considered colorless.
