Hi everyone! I'm hoping someone can help me advise if this star ruby is genuine or fake. I know it's not the best quality but it's set in platinum. Apologies for the photos it's pretty cloudy out, I did my best with inside lighting. Thanks in advance!

I'm no expert, but I heard you can look for hexagonal growth patterns if they're visible? Lack of them doesn't mean it's fake either. And something about the star formation how it should move around a lot with the light? The star and the stone overall looks natural/genuine to me if I were to guess. As for treatments, i wouldn't know. I'm guessing maybe heat treated at most? Hopefully someone else can give you a more clear answer :) but cooool ring! cabs are so awesome

Thank you! =)2I had read the same about the hexagonal pattern and was questioning if this looked more rounded. I'm totally ok with heat treated, just was feeling that if it was fake I overpaid. I'm a big fan of Star sapphires (I only have black ones though) they are so interesting!

Yes I think it is real. It is very opaque and poorly polished though. Are you buying it?

I won it in an eBay auction. The setting is nice and solid and I don't mind the imperfections in the stone (plus I definitely can't afford the perfect stones right now!) Just was second guessing if I should request a return if the stone is fake (listed as real). Thank you!

A repolish should cost much and could go a long way! Food for though. It has a nice hand presence.

Thank you for the suggestion, that never occurred to me. I'll see if there's a place nearby that does that kind of work.

One more vote for natural. Star sapphires and rubies aren’t heated because the heat dissolved the silk, and the silk is the reason you have a star in the first place. And synthetics are usually grown in the typically desirable colours and with essentially perfect clarity. This one is way too purplish and opaque to be synthetic.

Mmhmm, another chime for a real one.

I am no expert, however, I too believe it is real for the main reason that the star is not perfect and slightly wonky with some of the rays.

The stars in synthetic ones that I have seen are all perfect, too perfect to be real, IMHO.

DK :))

That's very interesting, thank you for the lesson! Star gems are my favorite.

I do have a synthetic one that is exactly as you describe. Actually I'm not a huge fan of it, just too perfect I guess. Haha
