I am unsure, but it’s at least a somewhat different world, today, shopping for a diamond, from when I was originally shopping 5 plus years ago. I’m not sure when the world changed, and if it changed…but certainly another element of shopping consideration entered my consciousness just a short 3 months ago, when Kenny sent to Pricescope a snippet about a perception of the Kimberly Process experiencing stresses, if not downright failing.
Since then, I’ve taken to getting Google alerts to read up on this, and in this time, despite commentary here to the contrary, I’ve seen what I regard to be a significant move…which is that wise diamond guy Rappaport quitting a significant Diamond Council because of the perceived failure of the Kimberly Process. Otherwise, in smaller ways, there have periodically been good and bad things I’ve observed that can cause one to either cheer, or worry, depending on the day.
Also during the process, and brought forward in the same thread in which Kenny alerted us to these problems, it may have been suggested that Paul with Infinity has a uniquely clear handle on where his diamonds are sourced from…although I don’t know frankly, at least yet, how thoroughgoing that is (and the fact of such solid knowledge has been questioned on this board as well).
I do think I know a few things:
- That the recently, specifically problematic diamonds identified from Zimbabwe, have been tied to a certain coloration, which any diamond vendor can (and should, and probably effectively does) keep an eye for, which provided a measure of protection for everyone
- Regardless of the above, a recent alert concerning Kimberly is that counterfeit papers have been appearing, and folks have been warned to watch for this, and so, consequently,
- Are any vendors, I do wonder, whether Infinity or other, particularly well positioned to be cognizant of such good or bad information?
But, and anyway, the thing is this…without more information…I’m inclined to be Sara sympathetic. That is…given limited knowledge, and concerns about:
- Not knowing how well reflector devices…and even AGS certification…ensure the ideally desired measure of quality
- Not knowing well enough as I would like that the diamonds sourced from most any vendor, let alone a Pricescope vendor, aren’t painfully tainted with respect to their origin,
- Suspecting that even though Paul has in place a set of vendors who if anything can by and large NOT be counted on to have a web presence, so you can’t even really count on even knowing what these range of options cost, but again, suspecting that you could at least work with Wink who posts here, and have him source virtually all of Paul’s offerings, providing an effective access to all of these
- And finally, appreciating that at least Paul takes the time to write on this board, so if you don’t know what he’s thinking about something, you can probably ask him…
…given all of these things, today, on March 12th, I’ll share that Infinity provides, it seems to me, a reason to take a look at their inventory, at least maybe first, and even…despite the premium which Julie once assessed at what could be a grand per diamond.
These…just some stray thoughts from me on this day.
Regards,
P.S. And…on the Kimberly front, and intelligence available…I would be happy to be made more informed about this altogether, and do realize that this is written with not what I would like to regard as sufficient knowledge, but suspicions, nonetheless.
