I am in the market for a square cushion diamond. In attempting to use the diamond search I found no way to employ l/w or l/w ratios to rule out many diamonds.
I would also like to verify that a diamond with larger l/w size should appear larger?
I would also love to be able to rule out any diamonds that appear to have the"crushed ice" effect if there is a way to find this on a cert?

You can't search for a specific L/W using the PS search, nor can you search for a certain faceting type. What you can do is use the advanced search to search only for diamonds with photos only, so that way you can see their faceting.

If I were you I'd contact a couple of specific vendors and give them your budget and criteria. Or, you can post your budget and criteria here in RT and people might help you find what you're looking for, too.
 
We are looking for a .72 to 1.02 square cushion to be mounted in a 5.6mm halo Color D - F Vs2 or better Exc to VG cut Budget is 3600.00

I see that you mentioned a 5.6mm halo. do you have a setting already that the diamond has to fit into?
 
Precisely the issue. The setting was most important to the fiance so we have the frame and are in search of the centerpiece.
 
Have you purchased the setting? Because all manufacturers will customize the setting to the actual stone - which is what you want. You will have a VERY hard time finding a stone by dimensions, as no database lists it by that - unless you can get a report in excel that you can sort by dimensions (highly unlikely). Have you purchased the setting and are unable to return it?
 
I would also suggest returning the setting if you still can. It's hard enough finding a well-cut cushion, but one that's perfectly square, and to those specific dimensions - it could take you a VERY long time. First find the stone.
 
If you're really stuck with the setting, have you identified a jeweler who will set the stone in the setting for you? There is generally some wiggle room or tolerance in the dimensions of the stone you can use. Find out what that wiggle room is. You will not find a 5.6 x 5.6 stone.

Also, you're most likely going to need to expand your color range. In the size you're looking at, color is not terribly noticeable. I'm going to link to you some stones that are probably outside your comfort zone, but try to keep an open mind. You've created a herculean task for yourself.

So, here are some options for you.
5.72 x 5.70 I VS1 .91 http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-VS1-Ideal-Cut-Cushion-Diamond-1281313.asp This one has medium blue fluorescence, which can help it to face up whiter. Again, should be completely eye clean, and it's perfectly square. The 0.1 mm larger than your setting dimensions should be workable if it's a prong setting. Check with the jeweler. If the ASET checks out, this would be my favorite.

5.58 x 5.44 I VS2 .90 http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Cushion-Diamond-1279770.asp You can't gauge color by the picture. As to the inclusion, the picture is something like 40x. This is a VS2 stone, there's almost no chance you will be able to see the inclusions with the naked eye.

5.59 x 5.37 H VS2 .90 http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/H-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Cushion-Diamond-1280486.asp No, it's not exactly square, but it might be workable.

5.51 x 5.47 F SI1 .90 http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/F-SI1-Ideal-Cut-Cushion-Diamond-1302233.asp You're going to like the color on this one, but the inclusions suggest that this is probably not eye-clean.

5.44 x 5.35 E VS1 .81 http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/E-VS1-Ideal-Cut-Cushion-Diamond-1315219.asp Smaller than your setting, but nearly square, and it might be workable. There might be a tiny airline in the halo.

It's very challenging to evaluate cushions online. You want ASET images of the stones to evaluate light performance. James Allen will give you 3 for free. Either narrow down the list to 3 (maybe other posters will have picks from amongst these), or be prepared to pay to evaluate all of them.

As to pricing, you want the Pricescope wire discount price for these, they're all within or just a hair over your budget.
 
One other possibility: 5.5 x 5.38 I VS1 .76 http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/9344/ This is a guaranteed performer, graded ideal by AGS. Yes, it's basically 5.5 x 5.4, but that 0.1 difference is probably not going to be noticeable since you're a hair under 5.6 anyway.

One suggestion I have is to cut out pieces of paper to the exact scale and place them in setting to see how they would work. So, for example, cut out a 5.5 x 5.4 slightly rounded square and see what it looks like. This may be easier with a CAD type of program.
 
Good choice, Milton! A good jeweler can extend the bezel inside the ring (if it's a bezel) - this did this for my bff that lost the original diamond in hers and had to replace with a smaller family diamond. Not even noticeable now...
 
I wish I knew how to term the mount, bezel vs prong. As you can tell, this is a first experience. It is a Gabriel setting ER 7527W44JJ.
The James Allen website is terrrific and great advice. I have manually gone through numerous stones, hundreds and hundreds and the james Allen website with photos gives me a good idea of the type of cushion. I will request the recommended reports. I watched the GOG video which is extremely helpful and truly like some of your recommendations for stones as well. I have my eye on a 5.56 x5.51 F Vs1 and will pray this is a fit. Paper model is a great idea as well. Thank you all.

I'd still return it if at all possible, get the stone and then have it set in this setting made to fit your stone. Lots of vendors carry Gabriel & Co, or can get the stone to them for setting.

If you really can't return it, then this is a prong setting. You should have some wiggle room on the stone size. But you MUST talk to a jeweler to determine how much wiggle room. Before you do anything else, please find out if you can do +/- 0.1mm, +/- 0.5mm, or whatever the case may be.

The most important factor in diamond selection is cut quality, not color. You seem to be very color-focused, and obviously very focused on the specific dimensions. This is an expensive purchase, and you want to get it right.

Find out from a jeweler how far you can deviate from 5.6 mm, and we can better help you find an excellent performer.

ETA: From the Gabriel website, it mentions that the setting fits a 5.7 mm stone, btw. The exactly square 5.7 that I linked above would probably work great, if it performed well. You just need to know exactly what dimension range you can use.

You need to return the setting. Gabriel will make the setting to fit your stone...That is one of their selling points!! But, if you buy a diamond from James Allen, then get the setting from a Gabriel retailer, the jeweler is supposed to order the setting to fit your stone, then they can set it for you when the mounting comes in.

I will read over my contract with the jeweler to see my options as I had requested specifics from him about what size diamonds could be used in the setting we ordered. Thanks again for the advice

It's common for Pricescopers to buy a diamond at one place and their setting somewhere else - not ideal, but common. If you want both a great cut cushion and that setting (at a discount, I might add), Good Old Gold is a great vendor.

Yes, but it combines the chunky cushion with the setting you picked! I still think it would look lovely with something under a carat for sure! Honestly, I think it might be TOO blingy with that size, but that's just me!

Anyway, did you decide on a stone yet? What did the vendor say about returning the Gabriel setting??

Also, is your $3600 budget for the stone and setting or just for the stone?
 
The setting had a poor finish some of the holes behind the side set diamonds had gold filled in some partial and some open. I took it to our jeweler who said they would not set with a diamond and they did not like the prong weight either. They also weighed the setting and it only weighed 2.799 grams Gabriel advertises this at 3.60 and tdw @.42 I believe it should have been closer to this weight even tho it is a smaller ring. Don't know what to think of this. I have my eye on 2 diamonds. Budget of 3600 was for just the diamond. Thoughts?

I am very very upset with the difference between the Gabriel 360 version versus what we received. Unfortunately, the fiance loves, loves this ring. The jeweler has agreed to a return with no problem! The dilemma is the difference between what Gabriel has advertised and what it has produced. The stunning version you had on line has no interior holes in the ring or the halo from inside the mounting. The one we received has some open, some half filled and one totally filled. And the weight issue. I wondered if this was even a gold ring when i held it it is so light!!
 
Since your jeweler is willing to take back the setting no problem, and assuming that includes a refund or partial refund to you, perhaps you can get one of the August Vintage cushions and the Gabriel setting through Jon at GOG? It would still be the setting your fiance loves, but one that is made for a stone of your choice.

ETA: Jon isn't going to give you a sub-par setting that isn't exactly as advertised btw.
 
I would suggest that you return the setting and have them make a new one, once you have picked out your stone. Have your jeweler, or whatever jeweler you end up getting your stone from (Good Old Gold maybe) discuss the issues directly with Gabriel. They will want you to be happy.

My jeweler ordered this same setting for me so I can see if I liked it and he intended to use it as a stock setting at his store (because he would not sell me the stock setting but order one in my size and that would fit the stone I picked). I did notice that the milgrain on the halo was not perfect, but I also think it had more character that way - I want a more vintage/antiquey look.

I am thinking that maybe you should check with Engagement Rings Direct. As I understand it, they make the settings to order. I would suggest the Heather setting. It's so beautiful. ERD also sells chunky cushions.

Thank you all for your assistance in this process. The plan is to return the ring with my host of complaints and allow the jeweler to deal with Gabriel and reorder. I have a hold on 2 diamonds

btw, have any of you used the diamond review - diamond finder. It allows you to check on prices through various retailers on many diamonds. I would appreciate your feedback on diamonds. I do like the GOG but I have the color issue for my price range.
