Hello,

I am having a setting made by a jewler and wanted to get some opinions on the size of side diamonds for a split shank diamond ring. I found a setting that I love and wanted it replicated on a smaller scale (diamond center stone on diamond below is 3 ct, mine will be 1.5 ct rectangular radiant). The jeweler suggested using 1 pointers for the side stones on the split shank, but I feel this may be too think for the look I am trying to create. My finger size is 4.5 so I do not want anything to bulky. Would half pointers or 3/4 pointers (.0075) look to small? I have attached a picture of the original ring i am trying to recreate (but on a smaller scale) below along with a sketch the jeweler provided using 1 pointers...(which i think make the split shanks too think) Your opinions are much appreciated!

I'm linking the picuture of the setting since I cannot seam to upload the pictures. I'll try again with the sketch from the jeweler.

Probably is going to be thicker but you have to take into account of the strength and durability of the piece. Smaller stones will have thinner split but the shanks will also be much weaker, resulting it bending, deforming much easier and then melee stones popping out as a result. Not a fan of melee stones on the split shank.

Thanks for your response, so you would not recommend going smaller than 1 pointer?

I prefer sturdy, durable rings, so thin shanks with melee is a no for me.

For your design, I would go with what the jeweler recommends, as he is the one going to make it, depends on his skill, materials he uses, maybe he can make it work. Ask to see similar designs he has made in the past to get an ideal of his capabilities. If doing CAD, should not be too difficult to get 2 drawing with 2 different melee sizes if he is comfortable working with a smaller size melee.

If you want smaller diamonds, by all means go down to 1.2mm, (3/4 points), or even smaller. When you do this you are not obligated to make the bands smaller and I would suggest keeping the bands at close 1.4 to 1.5mm wide, (and 1.6 to 1.8mm thick), regardless of what size diamonds you use. This way using smaller diamonds actually makes the bands stronger since less material is removed from them. It also does not change the look too much since the amount of gold on each side of the smaller diamonds is marginal.
