So I despise sites like People of Walmart or any site or meme dedicated to taking pictures of average folk going about their business for the purpose of publicly shaming them for being fat/ugly.

It's just... low.

Not too long ago a model actually faced jail time for taking a sneak photo of an older woman in a gym locker room and posting it for others to laugh at on Snapchat.

Where do you draw the line? What would you do if you found a picture of yourself?

Re: Spinoff: taking pictures of people without their permiss

I admit to laughing at ppl of Walmart in the past, but largely because I can't believe people actually wear things to shop that I consider costumes/beachwear/being essentially nude. But the idea behind it is sad, so I try to avoid it because I would be sick at the idea that a pic of me was out there in that context.

But as far as making fun of people for looks alone (e.g. everyday ppl wearing everyday stuff and others mocking them for weight or looks), I'm entirely against it.

For example, someone going shopping in a baby outfit (including diaper, which I saw earlier), is on a different level than someone shopping and their underwear showing (which I'm sure many of us are guilty of when we bend down to get something).

Re: Spinoff: taking pictures of people without their permiss

Sometimes people will pose for pictures if they know they are wearing something outlandish or silly. I think it's important that they are in on the joke.

I enjoy going to drag brunches with my friends. It's all very tongue in cheek and the performers are talented and so much fun! We like to get pictures, and 100% of the time if you say "OK if we post this online?" they will direct the lighting and go above and beyond to make it perfect. They want the pics online so the show can be advertised and promoted.

If I went there to take pictures and say "Fat dude in a dress-sick!" that would be absolutely horrible. So why do it to strangers?

Two very pretty women with amazing figures.

And I do not want to see their parts sticking out anymore then the other women I posted.

So for me, it is not body shaming.

It is wearing inappropriate clothes.

Re: Spinoff: taking pictures of people without their permiss

It's sad and depressing to me that things such as ppl of Walmart exist. It makes you wonder if everyone's secretly a 14-year-old mean girl/boy inside.

Let me tell you, as an adult I've been every weight from 106 pounds to 200 pounds - spent many years at 110 - and I can tell you that when I was thin, I never experienced a single negative thought or feeling towards people who were overweight. It never registered on my radar. What business was it of mine? It's completely outside my nature to laugh at people for their appearance and I am amazed that so many so-called adults would do such a thing. I find unkindness very distressing, because adults should know better, and they are actively choosing the low road. And many of the people being unkind about someone's appearance are hardly oil paintings themselves! Maybe it's that old thing of putting others down in order to feel better about yourself. A disgrace in a full-grown functioning adult. Think how very hurt those people would be to see themselves on that Walmart thing. I just hope they don't know.

I've known some people who were, shall we say, very challenged in the looks department but they had a lot going for them because they acted supremely confident. No idea if it was an act or real, but it worked.

Edit: The inappropriate-clothes thing is another issue - I thought ppl of Walmart was shaming very overweight people, which is what I'm talking about above.

Re: Spinoff: taking pictures of people without their permiss

I think it's funny.

I'm old, ugly, gross and also fat (frankly I find lean men extremely unattractive so big is beautiful to me).
Pics of me are probably up on the Internet for the entertainment of low-brow cavemen like myself.

FCD pics I've taken have of my FCDs been stolen and used for profit by diamond sellers.
I don't care.

New world, this technology has created.

I DOOOO pay for all the music I have though.
Few do that.

Nazi's march in parades; while I find their message revolting, I served in the military to protect their right to free speech.

To each their own.

Re: Spinoff: taking pictures of people without their permiss

My family wonders how it is humanly possible that I have never downloaded a song illegally, but it's true. I haven't!

I don't see this as a "free speech" issue. I should be free to go out in public, mind my own business, and go home without pictures of me winding up on a college site. I understand we probably can't make it illegal, but I think it would fall under "Don't be an a***ole"

Lots of people tried to pass all kinds of laws because they thought gay people were gross. We can't be ****heads because we think other people are gross. Well I mean, we can but I would prefer we didn't.

Re: Spinoff: taking pictures of people without their permiss

Okay, I'm an @sshole.
Leave me alone, mom.

I won't tell you to go get a sense of humor because you're not just like me.
People just vary.

But I will defend myself from your pious intolerance.

Only if you wear them. :Up_to_something:

I have only ever taken one photo of a person for the purposes of sharing it. It did not identify (face) the person;it was from behind. I had DD at the pediatrician; we were seated in the waiting area. A guy was standing at the counter doing whatever (checking in, picking something up...). He was wearing his pants down welllll below his butt, and kept pulling them up every 5 seconds; I thought about offering him my belt. What made it even funnier was there was a little sign beside him on the wall that had some sort of child-age reference to respect for self & others (that's why I took the pic - irony).

I wouldn't go out of my way to 'shame' someone, but do I look at some folks and wonder if they own a mirror? Yup! I'm human, and personally view it as a self-respect thing. I have had to run out a few times with a 'less-than-self-respecting' looking appearance, and know I got some side-eye as well. Sometimes we can't help it (emergency run to the drug store), but those are usually pretty obvious. Otherwise, I don't get that bent out of shape about someone's opinion; if I did, I might do some self reflection about why I allow my self-worth to be defined by strangers.

Re: Spinoff: taking pictures of people without their permiss

So your way to vary is the only way to vary, got it!

Nope.
You are the one expressing intolerance for a very popular and legal humor site.
Humor is a funny thing ... Everyone (and every country) finds different things to be funny.

I think it's fine that you don't like or want to post pics of people of Walmart.
I leave you alone.
I'm not trying to convince you to be just like me.

Re: Spinoff: taking pictures of people without their permiss

I don't like them but people are jerks and are going to do jerk things. It is possible that some of the PoW dress up like that to get the attention and notoriety. Not my place to judge them. I am guilty of getting a kick out of the speedo pics in the other thread much to Ruby's chagrin. We alL fall down every now and then. But come on a mankinI begs to be giggled at.

BTW I have never downloaded a song ilegally either.

Re: Spinoff: taking pictures of people without their permiss

Kenny, I often find your "people vary" stance a way to attempt shutting down the conversation. I could be misinterpreting.

I'm not demanding anyone stop finding things funny. I'm not calling for sites to be taken down. I'm expressing a strong opinion, my viewpoint, and asking other people theirs. I started this conversation because I find things humans do interesting, I did not want to threadjack the other thread, and it's a break from politics.

If we all agreed with each other, shrugged, and said "Oh well!" we would run out of things to talk about mighty quick.

If I ever start a campaign to get POWM taken down I could agree.

Although I have over time become good with computers, in college (Napster ruled the illegal music scene) I basically just clicked around, couldn't figure it out, and quit. I had visions of the feds busting into my dorm and charging me with internet piracy. And buying $0.99 songs on iTunes is absolutely addictive anyway!

Not accurate.

You can do whatever you want.

It is your pointing out some supposed difference that it is OK for men and not for women, as if women are the only ones who are self conscious about their bodies.

Re: Spinoff: taking pictures of people without their permiss

I think having this discussion is a great way to learn what is currently acceptable and what isn't.

I don't think some people have been at this internet game as long as others. And I think they deserve a little bit of compassion and a less abrasive approach although I admit to being a snark-lover. So just as some see that it is right to grant unsuspecting people who are unaware their photo is being taken and then posted on the internet to be mocked, let us also consider that there are also people who don't understand right away that it is not acceptable to share said photos even if it supports their argument.

And let it be said (by me) that I also don't know everything and it is definitely NOT my place to set rules for anyone else. That's a moderator thing and you couldn't pay me enough to deal with all the shit Ella probably does. Sorry if I'm coming across as a d-head net nanny. Just thought these things deserved to be said.

Re: Spinoff: taking pictures of people without their permiss

To be fair the pics we posted of men are of celebrities and are fair game by that definition. I know you don't like what I said and that is your prerogative. I don't like pics posted of people who have not given their permission.

:wavey:

Re: Spinoff: taking pictures of people without their permiss

I used limewire in 2008 and filled up my ipod...and then my ipod got stolen so there's your irony.  Lesson learned, my friends, lesson learned.

:wavey:

I find paparazzi the lowest form of life.

Even celebs have the right to privacy and the right to not being humiliated.

But Red you are still missing my point.

Personally I do not care what pictures you or anyone post, as long as it does not involve children.

What bothered me is the double standard.

Re: Spinoff: taking pictures of people without their permiss

Ruby you are totally right, there is a huge double standard here and I started it by bringing up men and their appearance in swimwear.

I know I'm getting old, but I must be getting tired as well because I don't have it in me to debate any more or even say I agree with anyone at this point (and I do! It happens!) Could be the 2 glasses of cab... I'm turning in and wish you all a good Wednesday evening. Now be nice, everybody!

Re: Spinoff: taking pictures of people without their permiss

I do understand where Ruby is coming from about the "equal opportunity/man-shaming". I know a couple guys who are just as (if not more) self-conscious about their bodies for a host of reasons. Just saying - we women don't have a monopoly on 'feelings.' :wavey:

Yes you are right. I am sorry if I offended anyone with my double standard post.

I'm not offended at all, Red. :wavey: I am guilty of having forgotten at times they aren't superhuman. I do think most guys would shrug it off, if they were even listening.

Funny story (and related/timely): DD was downtown the other day, and she said some young guy (her age) was walking toward her/opposite direction down a side walk. He stopped just short of her, gave her a "once-over" (up & down), and said "8".

She looked at him up & down, and said "2", and went about her day. THAT'S how we roll!

Throw me in the basket with those blokes, I have had body image issues for the longest time because I was a chubby kid who was made fun of however I have dealt with that for the most part. Doesn't mean I don't get days where I feel lousy about what I see in the mirror though, I am human and with flaws.
When I was hovering around the 210-220lb mark I wasn't too worried about my body but now that I have dropped to 170-175lb I am noticing some weird things happening with my torso and I am reluctant to take my shirt off around anyone but my wife. Mind you I wouldn't have taken my shirt off when I was heavier anyway

But here's the thing, if somebody wants to shame me for my body for whatever reason - what can I do about it? Good luck to them if they want to take pics of me and risking my ugly mug breaking their camera lense

Re: Spinoff: taking pictures of people without their permiss

I think we would all like to believe that if we stumbled across a meme of ourselves at our least flattering going viral we would self reflect, take it with a grain of salt, use it as a future catalyst for better judgement.

In reality it would suck. You'd feel violated and ashamed. If you were already suffering with depression/anxiety it could be the tipping point. We can't blame ourselves for the actions of others in most cases. But you can choose not to take a photo of a person with the express intent being to humiliate them.

I really just can't wrap my head around taking a photo of a stranger in that context.

Yup. I know I'd be horrified. :blackeye:

I agree Elliot. I do not like those kinds of sites. They are mean spirited IMHO.

I agree completely Elliot. It would be mortifying and horrifying if you were the one in the photo. And forget about you would feel if it happened to you personally for a moment because independent of how *you* (the general you) would feel it is WRONG ethically and morally to post a knowingly embarrassing photo of someone (and without their permission).

It is always WRONG to make fun of someone based on their appearance or any other superficial characteristic and I would go even further and say in general in it wrong to make fun of anyone for any reason. But there is definitely a difference b/w a good laugh with someone vs at someone. KWIM? We have all laughed at ourselves and that is part of the human existence. Stuff happens and we have to laugh at ourselves. But it is an entirely different story to laugh *AT* someone and for such a mean spirited reason.

Sorry for the lecture I didn't mean to go on and on but I feel passionately about this topic. It is *not* OK to make fun of anyone especially a civilian (as opposed to a politician let's say).

Speaking of politicians HRH Francesca has given me her permission to share this photo of her.
