I spoke with Tan about returning the sleepy spinel from my prior thread. He would really rather keep my money (

) than refund it. He is trying to make it worth my while by offering a trade.

I''d like to have opinions on this stone that he''s offered. 1.65 orangy red spinel

my opinion: love the picture but if the stone is as good as the picture it would be selling for about $1200 or more.

can he offer anything else?

coming from someone who is browsing Tan''s site ever so often. He frequently have something like this going at 0.99 starting bid. Looks nice, not impressive from the photo and description..

Hmmmm.
yes he starts some of these a .99 but as one who bids frequently on those in the hopes of a chance deal those days are gone. Seeing this start at .99 I would bid but still expect it to finish in the range he has it priced at. But that''s not really the point for either Tan or Uppy.

I''m not sure I understand the deal properly yet. IS this in addition to the Two you currently have or do you send back the 1.8 (#2) stone in exchange for this smaller stone. This one is less pink and less glowy. and still has a window. DO you like this one? are you drawn to it? Weren''t you only interested in having just one stone in the first place? what is the difference in price? plus the cost of returning one and shipping another?

Are you feeling magnanimous? Do you perhaps have a friend who is envious of your fine stone purchases who might like to take it off your hands instead of returning it to tan? I dont think that''s really your responsibility but if you know someone you could offer it to them. If not send it back. You know you''ll be back to buy from him again in the not far future, and even if not you know your threads here have sent him another ten sales already. You can just say thank you that is a sweet and tempting offer, but it is not right for me at this time. the mere fact that you have posted this has sent another ten people looking at that stone on ebay (and not including me; I have my eye on another stone of his!).

VL, I REALLY want to meet you in RL! You''ve managed to crawl inside my brain like a little earwig and find the juicy little parts where all of these exact thought are awhirling around. I really only need one of these stones, but I''ve got to confess that I WANT THEM ALL!!! I just can''t resist their Jolly Rancher goodness! I do think this stone is really pretty, but I''d just have to try to create another project to use it. I also must confess a warped sense of obligation based on an admiration and appreciation for Tan''s business. Really, I''d rather pay off the Leon baguette setting I''ve got in the works. Oh.... if it were just easy to say "no, thanks" and stick to it! You wouldn''t want a pretty stone?? Or a nice vintage diamond?? I have a problem turning my back on those too.

Can you get a credit from Tan for something in future? I''m sure something will come up that you just have to have that also adds diversity to your collection?

Really, though, I think you should stick to your guns and pay off the Leon. It''s not like you''re not ever going to buy from Tan again...

I really admire your capacity for empathy. I think we both read into his offer perhaps a cash-strapped week that he''d like to try to alleviate. Happens to everyone. The difference is most people wouldn''t even notice or speculate about another''s situation. On the other hand you do consider others. A few months ago you were very kind in explaining the circumstances and wants of another PSer that set my wheels turning in much the same way. (we;ll talk about that another time, I hope). The reality is we help when we can, and we feel bad when we can''t. But it is also important to remember that I am speculating about your possibly speculating about his possible reasons for wanting to make you this deal. Of course he doesn''t want to lose the sale, but the why is really his business. You should focus on what you want now. do you want at this time an other pink spinel for a project yet unplanned that will put you off schedule for a project nearing completion? I believe that if you take the refund now another person will buy a stone from tan in the short term and there will be a fleeting instant of balance in the universe. Unless you really really really like this new stone and want it so much that you would send back both the others for the one. but do keep in m ind the shipping both ways part. not huge but it''s enough to take the edge off of a good deal.

Only if you love it. It is too brown and desaturated for me, even at that price. You should never be guilted into an exchange or to keep the stone no matter who the vendor is. The vendor being cash strapped is really not our concern as I doubt vendors could care if WE are too cash strapped to buy their goods.

If you wanted a refund, stick to your guns and get a refund. As a salesman he is trying to keep the money in his pockets. I doubt it has anything do do with low sales. Just trying to keep the sale alive. I do it, and most sales people out there in all industries.

Don''t be forced into doing something you didn''t want to do. You will end up with buyers remorse later on.

I WANT THEM ALL!!!
Amen to that! I seem to be becoming a spinel junkie too.

I think this second stone is pretty, and of course I''d love to have it, but it seems to lack the intensity that the 1.82 had in Tan''s videos. I''d pass on it.

+1, and a +1 to Rockhugger. I only buy gems I can''t live without (though my family doesn''t quite understand this "can''t.live.without.gem..!" kind of feeling, hehe!). I think buying gems I''m not head over heels about makes me wish I''d kept the funds for something bigger and better that I actually am drawn to. Its really up to you though; if you like it, get it. If you don''t, don''t convince yourself to get it anyway.

I have to admit I wasn''t feeling the one you showed. it looks brownish to me? Maybe its the orange....I just am not liking the color.

I think you should stick to your guns and tell him you''d rather just return and refund for now.
