How about including the diamond market, diamond buyers and why they purchase, methods of purchase such as online, jewellery stores and so on?

If its not already covered in your 4c''s topics, I''d suggest the reflector technologies such as ASET and fire/image scopes. You can find a ton of information on the site for Good Old Gold: gog.com

oooh, are you having slides? how about a section on the most famous diamonds, with pics!

good suggestions so far - vital to include, the importance of CUT!
But, how much time do you have, lol..that could easily be a whole speech in its own..

Ditto CUT is key to buying a beautiful diamond, Today cut is about the proportions that go into a well cut diamond. Proportions play a key role in a diamonds appearnace.. I think it would be a great part of your speech... When you talk about cut you can also talk about the make of a diamond and all that goes into it..

Table %
Crown angle
Pavilion Depth

ETC.... Many people don''t know this, so it would be an eye opener for them...

Good luck!!!

Lots of good ideas here.

How long is your speech to be?

Given your inclusion of history, for balance, I''d vote with Lorelei...

Ideally, if you did this, I''d pick up both conflict diamonds, and its next wave, fair trade diamonds.

But...that would be based on proportionality of topics, and the hope you''d have a really long time.

Otherwise, and despite the fact that cut is included in the 4 Cs...you could certainly instead do a) history, b) 4 Cs as your father knew them, and then c) 4 Cs turned upside down, based on more contemporary understanding, where the more important piece is not the one that''s as conventional to measure, which is cut, as our friends here are suggesting, and to include sure reflector technology, which you could demo (why not), etc.

Best wishes,

Uh, Nani.. have you been surfing PS when you should have been paying attention in class? J/K

Tailor your fourth point to your audience.

Are they in-the-market-for-an-engagement-ring-age? Consider Lorelei's suggestion. Bored kids just looking to fulfill a requirement? Maybe Melanie's suggestion. Engineers looking to fill a general ed requirement? See Kaleigh's suggestion. Students all fired up to change the world? Address the ethical questions that Regular Guy raises.

Good luck!

ETA: How appropriate that you posted this in "Rocky Talk!"

You might want to speak about how diamonds have been a financial last resource for people during the 1900''s. How refugees used them to escape from one country to the next and how different the reality of the world is today.

When I give speeches, the 4 C’s section tends to put them to sleep since most people have heard this a hundred times in one form or another. Ears start to perk up when I talk about history and everyone is interested in what’s happening NOW. Things like internet marketing, new finds, new technology used in cutting, changes at DeBeers and the other major producers (most people don''t even know there ARE other major producers), etc.
