Hi I'm new to this forum and new to diamonds. I recently bought an engagement ring for my girlfriend overseas. I'm leaving to see her in about 8 days and not sure if I should return/exchange the ring I bought for her. It is a princess solitaire .42 carat, G color, VS1, 70.6% depth, 81% table, with no fluorescence and is GIA certified. It sits on a X prong 14k setting. I feel like it's not giving enough sparkle back at me with or without light. Could this be cause of the x prong setting cause it's kind of low and covers a good chunk of the ring or is it just from the diamond itself?

Thanks,

Allen

i would think it relates more to the cut of the diamond itself than the setting. a diamond that is cut extremely well will have more sparkle than a poorly cut diamond. its difficult to tell if this is the case from the info you've given us. the depth seems alright though the table is bigger than the ideal. can you post the GIA report? pictures of the stone/setting?

diamonds bought from shopping malls tend to be overpriced and poor quality IMO

If you don't have your heart set on proposing in 8 days i would recommend spending some time on here and having PS'r suggest good stones for your budget so you can make an informed decision. Read up on your return policy to check your options

No, it's definitely not because of the setting. excellent cut = sparkle. It sounds like you don't have a well cut stone. 80% depth is pretty deep even for a princess so you're loosing mm face up...Can you return it? What's your budget?

Thanks for the respose, I'll post a pics of the ring and GIA report a little later on today. It says its a square modified brilliant cut and the depth is 70.6% , table is 81% for the second response.
I bought the ring from jewelry exchange near Los Angeles. I believe I have 30 days to return it.

Oh and btw I bought it for $1190 out the door so my budget is right around there...

Ok....Well that's actually worse. The table is far too large! Rule of thumb is that the table should be smaller than the depth. Are you open to other options?

If you could stretch your budget to either of these....they are amazing and will absolutely give you the sparkle you're missing. I'd suggest putting it in a plain solitaire for now so you can get the best performing stone your money can buy:

Small princess, huge table.... just not a lot of opportunity for sparkle. Start over.
