SP shared prong...how does the setting really look...

All of the rings I have been able to try on locally look more like this with the shared prong...

See how the prongs are flush with the outside of the stones?

But then look at this SP pic...

they seem more "inside" or is it just an optical illusion? Does this affect the protection of the stone?
