Hey guys,

This is a general comment to everyone, as I''m requesting advice about my diamond but for those buyers who purchased from southern ontario, I''d like to hear your response as well.

I''m from Kitchener, and I''ve always been recommeneded to this one particular guy here who I''ve visited and has been very pleasant. He has alot of business. He purchases his diamonds from a guy in T.O. I''m trying to see if it''s worth the hassle to drive to T.O and buy from a Jewler there. Only if it''s going to save me $300+, otherwise, I''ll stick with him and pay him for his work.

The diamond specs:
Princess cut
Weight: 0.82
Colour: E
Clarity: SI1
Cut: Very good
Price: $3700 Canadian ($3283 U.S)

A few more IMPORTANT things i''d like to add and ask for input which are very important.

I wanted this time to be white, therefore E colour was selected, and the cut too make it sparkle. The diamond appears beatiful after comparing it to others, however, the price is a concern because it appears that I could potentially get it cheaper if I hed to T.O (after I read a good thread from here about a member who purchased from North York with all positive response because they match Price Scope''s prices).

On my first visit he didn''t have any diamonds in my price range ($3500-4000), so he went to T.O to buy a few for me and others.
When I returned to his store I examined the diamond through a 10x microscope and he pointed out the only flaw, which was a minor/small white line, which I was unable to see after numerous attempts. He said it was so faint that it could easily pass as a VS2. I do believe him, because he showed me other SI1''s which were more obvious.

After searching online and comparing it to the U.S''s price, my diamond can range from 2400-4000 (U.S), but because I went in with little knowledge (only the 4 basic C''s), the other important information was never brought up. Such as depth, table, cul, sym, pol, flr etc.. When he showed me the diamond, the package with the sticker on it was from Gem Scan and only gave the 4C'' specificationss. He said he''d get me the appraisal after I purchased it.

He also stated that Princess daimonds can only have the highest cut grade of ''very good''. There is no such things are excellent/ideal for Princess. When he told me this it was hard to believe because everwhere I''ve been too (stores and online searches) all have ideal and excellent cuts, which are above very good. However, whenever I searched for a Princess diamond on pricescop.com the actual cut is never given, just measurements. So what is it? His reputation is very good, so I took his word on it, so I need some insight on this matter. What should I believe?

The band would cost $400 for a 14k white gold. He said the bands range from $350-400, and mine would cost 400. I selected a basket ski-tip and slope setting.

Another point that should be mentioned is that he follows some sheet when he caclulates the price. It lays out the various specs of each diamond, he inputs the specific digits into the calculator (4 C''s) and gave me a price. I seen the chart and it appears like a standard guideline he follows so that he does not screw over his clients.

Is the price worth it? Should I search else where? Buy online? Any comments or questions that I can answer or help in the matter to make my decision easier would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Hi x-treme! Welcome to Pricescope! I live in southern Ontario but purchased my diamond from an on-line vendor. I will try to give you some quick advice.

I''m from Kitchener, and I''ve always been recommeneded to this one particular guy here who I''ve visited and has been very pleasant. He has alot of business. You need to get those details before you buy the diamond not afterwards in an appraisal. I personally find that gemscan grades soft and your E colour is probably more of an F or G to AGS/GIA

He also stated that Princess daimonds can only have the highest cut grade of ''very good''. There is no such things are excellent/ideal for Princess. I would say you need more information and should double check it against some in-house princess diamonds that are available, (do a search on pricescope). You should believe your own eyes too, but only after you have viewed some stones and researched princess cuts.

Only AGS gives cut grades of "ideal," "excellent," "very good." It is true that it is harder to get excellent polish and symmetry grades for princesses, it is inherent to the cutting process of the shape, but that does not mean it can't be done. Any vendor designations of ideal cut, non AGS should be backed up with some measure of performance or light return, however that may be defined.

Cut Grade is not reported on GIA grading reports for Princess Cuts.

GIA does however grade polish and symmetry, which is different from a cut grade.

GIA expresses polish & symmetry grades as Excellent, Very Good etc.

AGS expressed polish and symmetry as Ideal/Excellent/Very Good etc.

AGS expresses their cut grades for rounds, princesses in a numeric rating from 0 to 10.

Just out of curiosity who''s the jeweller? I live in that area and have been looking at jewellers to make a ring from a diamond that I purchased online.

Hi There,
Not sure what to tell you really. I''m from Toronto, work in toronto, but moved to Guelph when I got married 2yrs ago. I know of no one in Kitchener that I could recommend.

On the setting. $400 seems pretty good actually for a gold ring. Who is this jeweler you go to? It would be nice to know someone close.

On the idea of the stone, I would shop at a U.S vendor. I found too many local (then in Toronto) vendors would not take me seriously about looking for the kind of quality stone I wanted, PLUS, god forbid I should ask for pics in different lighting conditions. That set them over the top. Seems like I''m supposed to hear them tell me a stone is "very very nice, you wont see one like this for a long time" & then they try to rap up the sale in 15min. Sheesh. If you have the time, drive the 2hrs to Buffalo on your $60 tank of gas & save yourself a good $1K or more. You know, that savings alone can buy a week in the Dominican at a five star resort for one all inclusive. LOL Hey, just thinking of the honeymoon.

Many of the U.S vendors can set your stone into a similar setting for that price or lower. also too, you can stop over at the outlets & pic up some great clothes.

If you absolutely cant drive to Buffalo then perhaps give the guy in North York a try. I am too obsessive compulsive to keep it to one vendor. I have to have selection before I feel I''ve overturned all the rocks I could find & only then could I feel absolutely & completely happy with my purchase. Sorry, just a minor personality flaw I have. LOL Heck, its only an hour. I think driving to the Michigan border is longer, I dont know. I''m a Buffalo shopper. Ok, I know where the Fed. Ex. depot is & where a good Postal Station is. LOL The only other vendor I can give my recommendations for is Damiani Jewelers in Woodbridge. They have a good selection of stones, not hugely inflated & the guys are really good & non pressureing for the sale. Only thing, like most Canadian sellers, will carry primarily Gemscam certs. Occasionally they might have an HRD cert.

Good luck with all & remember we need pics on here of the completed ring.

:-)

Oh, chances are that your guy is buying his stones at 55 Queen St. or 27 Queen St. There are nothing but diamond & jewelery wholesalers & suppliers all in these buildings.

Hlmr, would you mind telling me which online source you used?
I''ve met a few individuals who''ve went this route to save money, but i''m not sure if it''s worth it or not. due to importing taxes etc...

Those looking for the jewler, do we have PM''s here? I dont want to give out his name on the forum.. i''d rather send a private message. Anyway of doing this?

Recommendations are to be made on the forum.

Don't worry about it, it's not very important. Personally, I like the service and respect that I get at King's Jewellers in Kitchener. I've known many people to go there over the years and as long as you have a bit of time (the owner can be a little bit long winded) you will be treated very well. The owner really takes his time with each customer to help them make the best decision. Case in point, I've been in there many times and everything he has told me matches with the research that I've done on the internet. Frankly, I would have purchased from him, but by purchasing online I got a better diamond from a cheaper price than what he could offer me. However, I respect his work and his time so I'm going to take the diamond to him to make the final ring.

Hello:

While my F2F shopping was limited to the province of Alberta, I would like to comment on this statement generalizing about "most Canadian sellers", since I found this was not like my experience(s). I am also Canadian and recently spent app. 10 months in search of a diamond upgrade, and visited 6 established non-chain B & M jewellers in Calgary/Edmonton. During this time frame I viewed no less than twenty, 3 carat + stones; the vast majority of which were certified by GIA and AGS. In fact, only three stones amongst this entire cohort were certed by other labs, namely GemScan (1), HRD (1) and EGL USA (1) and one was not certed at all. Moreover, at no time did I feel that my choices were "limited" by certain certs--by all appearances I had access to a variety of stones of all makes and pedigree.

But I digress: X-treme; do you have a deadline/in a rush for this ER? If I was to advocate anything, it would be not to rush into this important decision before taking the time to get to know "about diamonds", what you and your intended want in a diamond and follow up service(s) from a vendor, and having the opportunity to see more than one offering.

Given your parameters has your vendor offered to bring in more than one stone in for you to view so that you may compare them side by side? (inquire, as there may be a charge for this). Also, have you invesitgated USA Certed--an online vendor that has an office in Thornhill Ont where you can view stones? (if you use the search engine on this site, you may find testimonials of those who have used them in past).

Good luck in your search!

cheers--Sharon

I don't like to refer people here to a certain store; but there isn't much information on Canadian vendors/jewelers here. So, I am going to make a few recommendations to help out our fellow Canadian.

I use a jeweler at 325B Spadina Ave. in Toronto Chinatown. His name is Joe (I think) and the store is called Hung-Phat. His WG solitare settings are around $200 and he charges around $30 to set it while you wait. I don't like leaving my diamonds with a jeweler. I also like to talk to the setter and tell him exactly how I want it done.

He is extremely careful and tedious. I end up paying him $10 (total $40) more for his work after seeing him spend more than 1 hour setting my wife earrings.

Angelo at Cherish Jewelers (294 Lakeshore Road West). The owner/setter used to to work for Birks.

Damiani Jewelers in Woodbridge have nice branded settings. They are the only jeweler with a helium/sarin machine that I know of in Toronto. But they are a little pricey.

There are many jewelers at 21 Dundas Square main floor. But they are just the middle man. They get someone upstair to do the work and then take their cut. I don't think the diamond setters upstair want to deal with retail customers directly.

Disclaimer: I am not a affiliated with the any jewelers mentioned above. Check out their work before you use them.

Thanks for eveyone''s help.

I''m still undecided as to where I should purchase the rock and ring from. All seem appealing.

Do jewlers ever allow you to call them to ask for a price range for their diamonds? I''m not sure if i''ll have the time anytime soon to visit to North York or T.O to view a diamond, but calling to get an ideal would be really helpful to get an idea. Can anyone PM me?
