I have to apologize first because I know I could use all available resources and become more knowledgeable on diamonds, but the material just seems endless and I end up feeling overwhelmed! Also, I figure no matter how much I read most of the people on this forum will still be better equipped to find the engagement ring I'm searching for.

In short, what I'm looking for is a radiant cut diamond on a solitaire setting. Close to 2ct would be nice. From my extensive reading (sarcasm) I've learned that I'll pay less if I stay away from the round numbers (impressed yet?), so I was looking for diamonds in the 1.8-1.99ct range. I'm not concerned with imperfections not noticeable to the naked eye. If a microscope is needed to see the imperfections, I can live with them, thus allowing me to allocate the budget elsewhere. Which then brings me to my budget - hoping to keep it around $10k for the ring (diamond and setting).

Seems like James Allen is a highly recommended online dealer, so I went through their site first and found this diamond that seemed to fit the criteria I'm looking for - http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/radiant-cut/1.92-carat-j-color-vs2-clarity-sku-277333...

If I open up my search to diamonds in the 1.75ct range then I have a lot more options, but I am struggling to figure out which one is best choice given my criteria. The person who will be given this ring is just as clueless as I am, so I have to place some priority on ct because that is the only thing they know and have heard of. However, if there is a better bang for my buck diamond out there that isn't close to 2ct then I am open to it.

So if you haven't noticed, I could use a lot of help! Any and all is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Rectangular or square? I do not think you can hit 2 cts on your budget.

Square preferred but I'm open to rectangle as well.

I didn't anticipate actually getting a 2ct but do you think I can get close to it, like the James Allen diamond linked?

Does the other person specifically only want a radiant?

Yeah, your budget is just not realistic unless you want to put size over performance.

Get an idealscope image of the JA J diamond. If it ASETs most green and has some red, it could be worth the trade off.

But if you want a good performing 2 carat stone you are looking at: 12,500: http://www.b2cjewels.com/dd-5080410-2.02-carat-Radiant-diamond-I-color-VVS1-clarity.aspx

ONE THING: Carat WEIGHT is not determinative of size with radiants. A 1.6 stone can EASILY face up larger than a 1.75.

SO MAKE SURE YOU COMPARE DIMENSIONS NOT WEIGHT!

Here's a great stone: http://www.b2cjewels.com/dd-5164514-1.60-carat-Radiant-diamond-J-color-VS1-clarity.aspx
1.6 carats. 6.6 square.

IT IS THE SAME SIZE as this one: http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/radiant-cut/1.71-carat-i-color-vvs2-clarity-sku-191412 even though this one is 11 points heavier. 6.6 square.

OKAY?

James Allen will supply three ASET images which will tell us how the stones do with light return. So basically you need to narrow it down to 3. I would recommend going no lower than I color because you may be able to see some tint in a J.

I have no idea how this one will do on the ASET, but I like the look of it so far:

I could not find any other good prospects in I VS2-SI1 from 1.6-1.9 cts.

Thank you for your responses.

If JA will give me three ASET images, I'll ask for the three that have been mentioned in this thread so far:
http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/radiant-cut/1.92-carat-j-color-vs2-clarity-sku-277333
http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/radiant-cut/1.61-carat-i-color-vs2-clarity-sku-228258
http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/radiant-cut/1.54-carat-i-color-vs1-clarity-sku-239970

I'll wait until tomorrow, so if there is one that you feel is better for me to use as one of my three then please let me know.

The 2ct diamond for $12,500 would be over my limit. I realize that getting at or close to 2ct is unlikely but thought I'd shoot for that and see where things shake out.

The B2C diamond (http://www.b2cjewels.com/dd-5164514-1.60-carat-Radiant-diamond-J-color-VS1-clarity.aspx) is at a good price, I can actually go higher if a better option is available. It is a J color, however, it has better clarity and polish than the JA I color diamond. How that all compares I imagine is hard to tell without looking at the diamond in person.

Thanks again for the quick and helpful responses.
