We have XM in the Durango and it's been fun, sometimes songs come on that I've not heard in *years*, and I'm instantly transported to a different time/place, or I think of a particular person or instance. Songs that have helped me cope. Make me sad. Excited in different ways. Sometimes I take pictures of the screen and FB whomever it makes me think of.

What songs make you feel?

1991 Eric Clapton's 4-yr old son accidentally fell to his death from the window of a 49th-story NYC condo.

In his grief Clapton wrote: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JxPj3GAYYZ0

Would you know my name if I saw you in heaven?
Would it be the same if I saw you in heaven?
I must be strong and carry on
Cause I know I don't belong here in heaven

Would you hold my hand if I saw you in heaven?
Would you help me stand if I saw you in heaven?
I'll find my way through night and day
Cause I know I just can't stay here in heaven

Time can bring you down, time can bend your knees
Time can break your heart, have you begging please, begging please

Beyond the door there's peace I'm sure
And I know there'll be no more tears in heaven

Would you know my name if I saw you in heaven?
Would it be the same if I saw you in heaven?

I must be strong and carry on
Cause I know I don't belong, here in heaven

Really looking forward to seeing the responses here.

A few songs come to mind. "I Will Follow You Into the Dark" by Death Cab for Cutie. It was the first dance song at my wedding (morbid, I know) and it just brings me right back there and makes me think of my husband. "Unchained Melody" by the Righteous Brothers. It was a favorite of my dad's when he was alive. "Vienna" by Billy Joel. It reminds me of my parents. I used this song to dance with my step-father at my wedding, so it's extra special. Billy Joel explained the meaning of the song in an interview and it really spoke to me:

Why did I pick Vienna to use as a metaphor for the rest of your life? I go to visit my father in Vienna, I'm walking around this town and I see this old lady. She must have been about 90 years old and she is sweeping the street. I say to my father, "What's this nice old lady doing sweeping the street?" He says, "She's got a job, she feels useful, she's happy, she's making the street clean, she's not put out to pasture." We treat old people in this country pretty badly. We put them in rest homes, we kinda kick them under the rug and make believe they don't exist.

I'm sure I will think of some others. Great thread idea!

Most of the songs from the 70's. The music stopped after the early 80's..

From the first time I heard this song on the radio it made me feel something that no other song had. I went searching for the name of it.

Many songs do this for me. Most take me back to high school or junior high.

Valen Halen's "Love Comes Walking In" takes me back to my first love in HS-- in a good way.

The Eurythmics "Here Comes the Rain Again" always makes me relax. I don't know why, but it does.

This is really hard for me to answer as most of the time the music I listen to makes me feel something. Whether it be the lyrics or the actual melodies/rhythms/solos within the instrumental side of the band, something usually strikes a chord with me - if not more than one aspect to a song. How a song makes me feel can also depend on where I am in my life during recent events, during hardships it's truly been my best friend and provided comfort. But I'll add some songs here which do speak to me:

Lamb of God - Walk with me in Hell
This song has gotten me through so many hard times, the lyrics can be interpreted as first or second person which I usually do depending on where I am with a hardship and how I feel. At first I'll interpret it in second person as it makes me feel like I am not alone, when I am nearly out the other end I interpret it in first person as though I'm there for others. It's hard to explain but if you were to listen to the song (and read along with the lyrics since he is hard to understand), then you will see what I mean with lyrics like 'Take hold of my hand, for you are no longer alone, walk with me in hell'.
I think knowing that the vocalist lost his baby daughter and wrote that song also helps to give me strength as I listen to it as well. And musically, the guitar solo towards the end is just pure blues over fast single string speed metal guitar riffs, it's my favorite solo of all time. The ending scale run blows my head off.

Mudvayne - Rain Sun Gone
The music of this song takes me on a rollercoaster ride of 'feels'. Especially when it gets to the middle of the song where there's a interlude part; the clean guitar rhythm with soft vocals and the bass guitar doing some light but intricate backing kind of almost lulls you to sleep. Then they break back into the heavy part, like when the rollercoaster hits the top of the track and releases at free fall speed.

Lynyrd Skynyrd - Simple Man
Because sometimes I need to be reminded to take it easy, relax and just be myself. This song soothes me so much despite not being by one of my beloved metal bands lol.

LOL! This thread comes as if you've been inside my head, Packrat! I'm feeling quite nostalgic and have been listening to a lot of African music from "my time" recently. Here are a few examples...

South African artist, Brenda Fassie (MaBrrrrrr) with Weekend Special: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2g0hYgsy4Vc
This song is about a girl complaining that her boyfriend has no time for her during the week because he's probably with his wife and only has time for her over weekends. This song takes me back many years ago, to being pursued by a man whom everyone insisted was married but I was too naive to see it. When I eventually figured it out, my friends and I went out and got horribly, horribly drunk at a very dodgy tavern and played this on repeat. It was quite a sight!

Same artist: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1RvfDkzUOos Hearing this song immediately transports me back to when I was 19/20. Living in Germany. Terribly homesick. The only non-white person for miles. I'd turn this song up as loud as I could, put my hair up in a doek (scarf) and scrub down my house from top to bottom with tears running down my face. I vividly remember my German neighbour banging on my door to get me to turn it down and me pretending not to understand him!

Johnny Clegg and Savuka, Asimbonanga: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KfTkD-XWOFg A song by a white Zulu and his band, lamenting that Nelson Mandela is in prison and they haven't seen him in many years. In this video you see Madiba himself dancing to the song and speaking for a couple of minutes. Very special moment.

Aaaand then there's this one. Bit of a backstory here. It's an anti-apartheid anthem that was banned in South Africa. The Dr Victor version is the best, but this version (although not terribly good) is something many people never thought would ever happen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2HcDRIN1HHQ Eddy Grant performing it with a white Afrikaans singer for Nelson Mandela himself! And white people clapping and singing along! You play this song anywhere in the world and every South African drops what they're doing and sings along, lol.

I enjoy Western music too but these songs are indicative of what's been on my playlist recently. ;-)

Gosh, so many of the songs you posted give me the chills. Here's another one just a day late for the Memorial Day holidays.
Somewhere.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qc_JyFTVewc

Someday, somewhere
We'll find a new way of living
We'll find a way of forgiving
Somewhere...
There's a place for us
Somewhere a place for us
Peace and quiet and open air
Wait for us
Somewhere
There's a time for us
Someday there'll be a time for us
Time together with time to spare
Time to learn, time to care
Someday, somewhere
We'll find a new way of living
We'll find there's a way of forgiving
Somewhere... Somewhere... Somewhere...
There's a place for us
A time and a place for us
Hold my hand and we're half way there
Hold my hand and I'll take you there
Somehow...
Someday, somewhere...

And then there's John Lennon's Imagine.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XLgYAHHkPFs

Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today... Aha-ah...
Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace... You, ..
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one
Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world... You, ..
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

OK I have to add one more but there are so many that make me feel strong emotions. Just one more for now.
Janis Ian's At Seventeen

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VMUz2TNMvL0

I learned the truth at seventeen
That love was meant for beauty queens
And high school girls with clear skinned smiles
Who married young and then retired
The valentines I never knew
The Friday night charades of youth
Were spent on one more beautiful
At seventeen I learned the truth
And those of us with ravaged faces
Lacking in the social graces
Desperately remained at home
Inventing lovers on the phone
Who called to say - come dance with me
And murmured vague obscenities
It isn't all it seems at seventeen
A brown eyed girl in hand me downs
Whose name I never could pronounce
Said-pity please the ones who serve
They only get what they deserve
The rich relationed hometown queen
Marries into what she needs
With a guarantee of company
And haven…

LOL two more. Harry Chapin's Taxi and Cat's in the Cradle.

Taxi

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c5dwksSbD34

It was raining hard in 'Frisco
I needed one more fare to make my night
A lady up ahead waved to flag me down
She got in at the lights
"Oh, where you going to, my lady blue?"
It's a shame you ruined your gown in the rain
She just looked out the window, she said
"Sixteen Park side Lane"
Something about her was familiar
I could swear I'd seen her face before
But she said, "I'm sure you're mistaken"
Then she didn't say anything more
It took a while but she looked in the mirror
Then she glanced at the license for my name
A smile seemed to come to her slowly
It was a sad smile, just the same
And she said, "How are you, Harry?"
I said, "How are you, Sue?
Through the too many miles and the too little smiles
I still remember you"
It was somewhere in a fairy tale
I used…

Cat's in the Cradle

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KUwjNBjqR-c

My child arrived just the other day
He came to the world in the usual way
But there were planes to catch and bills to pay
He learned to walk while I was away
And he was talkin' 'fore I knew it, and as he grew
He'd say "I'm gonna be like you, Dad
You know I'm gonna be like you"
And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin' home, Dad
I don't know when, but we'll get together then
You know we'll have a good time then
My son turned ten just the other day
He said, "Thanks for the ball, Dad, come on let's play
Can you teach me to throw", I said "Not today
I got a lot to do", he said, "That's ok"
And he walked away but his smile never dimmed
And said, "I'm gonna be like him, yeah
You know…

And I promise last one. Don McLean's American Pie.

I forgot one very significant song. If it comes up on our iTunes playlist or the radio I have to turn it off. I hear the first line and I'm sobbing uncontrollably.

Music is pretty powerful isn't it? I'm familiar w/some of the songs listed but will check out the others!

For me, I am an 80's hair band girl at heart. My first concert was in 7th grade-Poison/Britny Fox. If Talk Dirty to Me comes on the radio, you better believe I'm a gawky little girl fawning over these men w/big hair and make up, and you'll be able to hear the song from many blocks away. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xCChxBSRo1Y

I don't recall when/where I first heard this song but I was reduced to a puddle. I had met a woman at a new job I'd started and we clicked like I didn't know two people could click. She was about 10 years older and had three kids, had moved up here from Oklahoma w/her husband and kids and their families to work at the packing house. We ended up joined at the hip and those kids were like an extension of me. They were about 10, 8, 6 or so. They knew this song too and when we'd go places we'd listen to it nonstop. She and her family moved back to Oklahoma and we lost touch. We reconnected on FB a couple years ago and the girls are also on there. I posted on one of the girls walls in reply to something and it turned into this conversation about me and them--and that song. The girls told me how much they loved me and how they loved that I was like a part of their family, and so fun to be around--and they still listen to the song, and they think of me when they do. I was so surprised that they even remembered it--20 years later! And they were like well, you made an impact in our lives. Talk about making me bawl. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMk8YWV7te8

Metallica/Harvester of Sorrow https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dhu22Iy8fGk
Many years ago, I was raped by someone who was supposed to be my friend. I was young, things like that "don't happen" in small towns in the middle of nowhere, nobody knew how to handle it, how to help me, what to do. I felt like..I don't know, a zombie, or a robot, just pushing it all to the side and acting like nothing had happened b/c that seemed to be what was expected of me, and what else was I supposed to do? I spent a lot of time wishing I could disappear and just be gone, away, somewhere, anywhere, nowhere. I remember sitting in my room, on the floor, in the dark, listening to this tape and at some point realized that I had tears running down my face, my teeth were clenched together, nails digging into my palms, shaking, all those pent up emotions, humiliation, anger, frustration, all came to the surface and in that song managed to find the start of a release. It has been "my" song since then.

Tim Minchin/You Grew On Me https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cEdBIbE_x2U
JD and I have that creepy uppy kinda love. If I didn't have him I really think I'd have somebody else.. ;-)

JD and I were out in the shop one day, working, listening to his ipod. I heard the first couple notes of this and turned to him "Country? Really?" and then went back to what I was doing. He didn't say anything. Song continues and I'm listening, and then I turned back to him and he said "Fitting, idn't it?" It's an "us" song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7LkLAbDkd7w

And this from How To Train Your Dragon. It's one of my all time favorite movies ever, and the music is amazing to me, but this piece and this scene in particular get me. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VD2OBcBCywM

Pack rat - If I watch this will it make me cry? As you can tell I'm rather emotional. I will burst into instant tears listening to Puff the Magic Dragon.

I'm so sorry to hear about your trauma of rape. I can't imagine the horror involved. I'm glad you found something that made you release the emotions you had bottled up.

Yes, music is powerful. I find some music haunting, some taunting, some uplifting and some is just like finger nails on a chalkboard. The song "I Will Take Care of You" makes me think of my mother. A friend played it (on piano) at my mother's funeral. If I wanted to calm down my late dog (before she went deaf), I'd put on Andrea Bocelli. It was like giving her a tranquilizer. It was the only thing that worked during a thunderstorm.

If I want to feel young and upbeat and I put on the ultimate "girls anthem" - Girls Just Want to Have Fun by Cyndi Lauper.

I dunno..it makes *me* cry. The clip I posted isn't the exact scene from the movie-the beginning part of it is missing, and the music isn't in the background at first before coming to the foreground like it is in the movie-it's the scene w/the music on top of it, so the little bits of "sound" from the scene itself, aren't there. But the gist of the thing as a whole is there. When Toothless starts "drawing" and then Hiccup is moving around in side the drawing, the music just makes my heart soar, and then the end part just brings the tears. Good tears tho, sweet tears.

This is another song that has always moved me. At first I only knew the version sung by Dan Fogelberg (which I think is magnificent), but I have come to like this version even more. I can cry over this if I let myself because my father is my hero.

Really a great idea for a thread :). I will stick to just a few bc I could go on and on and on....

I've been a huge Harry Connick Jr fan since I was a young teen. Got to see him in concert about 10 years ago, he was so good. This song always makes me remember the way I felt when I was young and crazy in love with my now husband (I'm still in love with him, lol. But that crazy drugged love feeling...). I know it's been done by many artists, but this is my favorite version:

On the Street Where You Live

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=8ihRFBMPaic

Next up:
This is my favorite driving song and my favorite Doors song, and also my favorite when I'm feeling manic or even sometimes depressed. I know, it's odd.

Roadhouse Blues

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Ww-qVcLm97c

Next:
Nat King Cole's Stardust - this is obviously a classic that's been covered a lot, but this is my favorite version. It always makes me feel soothed and melancholic at the same time.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=kzPLQpLAxc4

Last:

Al Green Tired of Being Alone

I remember the first time I really heard and listened to this song, as a young adult (already happily married, so I don't know why it got me so hard!!). But it just hit me and I immediately loved it. The chord progression early on is so satisfying too. I love listening to this song whenever I'm depressed bc it feels like I'm understood. Honestly, I don't have much to be depressed about, but it's just a chemical thing that I can't control, and sometimes using music really really helps. Anyway, link...

One of the most awesome duets I've ever seen. Opposite ends of the spectrum seamlessly joined. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gb-B3lsgEfA

Wow, Matata. Thank you for sharing this one. I would never have guessed that such a piece existed. (Never in a million years.) And yet, on YouTube alone it was viewed almost 10 million times. So a lot of other people were certainly aware of it! James Brown and Luciano Pavarotti? It worked!!!

Thanks again.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. I stumbled upon it when searching youtube for Pavarotti performing Nessun Dorma shortly after his death and thought "whaaaat the heck?!" Then I sat through it with my mouth hanging agape. He did a series of fund raising concerts for social causes for several years with artists all over the spectrum -- called Pavarotti and Friends. There's a performance of Panis Angelicus he did with Sting that was quite haunting. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gb-B3lsgEfA
