Hello everyone. My bf and I went to Robbins Bros in Torrance yesterday and met with our usual rep. If any of you have read up on my previous posts, you'll know that we were promised a "corporate discount" on the centerstone we had been eyeballing.

Well, turns out that the "corporate" discount is a bunch of hoopla because after our 3-hour sitdown, we were still unable to figure out just how much of a discount they were offering us. Anyway, on a brighter note, I saw a .89 G VS1 Princess cut AIG certificate (cut was GOOD, not VERY GOOD, EXCELLENT, or IDEAL) and we were told that with a platinum peg head, the diamond AND sales tax, that our final cost would be $5200.

In addition to that diamond (which was slightly shallow) but had a table that was "big", we saw a .91 I VS 2 that to me looked slightly yellow and slightly rectangular. In any case, $5200 (with this discount) was way too much for us. So... he found us a .77 G VS1 Elexese princess with a GIA cert. He said that our total cost (should we like it) would be $4100 after discounts and tax and what not. That's a way better price for us. However, the downside is that the diamond is not in their store. It needs to be sent to them from corporate and we're told we can come back on Wednesday to see it.

Thank god for all your PSers because I walked in there asking questions from left to right. Even the bf was shocked. However, unlike the previous posts I've read about RB, my rep was extremely shocked and impressed that I was asking all these legit questions and that I was familiar with the terminology. I amazed myself! My rep is fantastic and unlike the previous folks with bad experiences, my "bad ones" were from RB itself and not my rep. If any of you would like his name - I will gladly email it to you. I never speak with anyone else there. It's always the same person - the rest give me weird vibes.

In any case, wish me luck. $4200 total including tax, the new platinum peg head, the diamond .77 elexese and the mounting doesn't seem too bad to me. Besides, I found that seeing the diamonds in front of me helped me learn a lot too. I found that certain "factors" didn't really stand out to me even if they were on a lower scale. I hope that makes sense. In any case, I feel hopeful and I can't wait until Wednesday when we can finally see the diamond and decide. Once we do, we were told that we can come back on Saturday, drop off the ring and pick it up the same day (since we don't want to leave it there overnight).

I'm so excited... I haven't seen the specs yet but all I know is that it is a .77 elexese princess G or H and VS1 I think. That's all I know for now. I can't wait.

By the way, I was amazed at how the .89 G vs1 looked significantly larger than the .91 I vs2. I guess it was the shallow cut. I don't know anything about the .77's cut though.

Kiwi - Sounds like you had a good experience and I''m glad the sales rep respected your knowledge about diamonds!

BTW, in your thread of a few days ago you asked for what specs to look for and I accidentally posted specs for a round rather than a princess. Coda pointed it out and I hope you were able to see that I had posted the wrong thing before you went in there. (You must have though or the rep would have thought you were crazy because you would have been asking for something totally out of whack for a princess!

Can''t wait to see pics of your ring!

YAY, DeeJay~ Thank you!!! I can''t wait to post pics either!!! To be honest with you, I have a 20-pound binder with pics/specs, PS postings that I''ve printed out for the last couple of months. I always carry it with me - like an obsessive freak - but yesterday, the bf surprised me by taking me there with the ring in his pocket!! I was kicking and screaming inside because yesterday was the first day I didn''t have that binder glued to my hand. I had left it at work on Friday..... Eek!

So, I dug deeeeeep within and tried to remember EVERYTHING I could about color, grade and what not. The certificate being GIA instead of AIG or ESP or XYZ... I was so excited. I asked about a new prong head, their warranty, the cert, and everything else that I could remember! I have to say that before actually seeing diamonds, I would have bet money that the diamond would HAVE to be no less than an F or something but I found that I couldn''t see a difference when I saw the Gs or even the Hs... so~ I guess there is a good side to having a storefront you can go to... Based on PS posts, I''ve now learned (among many other things) that I want to protect the corners of the princess (hence the new peg head), I want a GIA cert instead of the AIG, and tons of other stuff. When I saw the cert in front of me for each diamond, I didn''t start twitching like I did before! I quickly skimmed through the percentages for table, depth and what not and saw the cut and other stuff as well. OMG. My bf was so proud of me yesterday. He FINALLY started boasting to the rep that I had been "stalking the PS forums and eating/breathing/dreaming of specs!" Heehee..

Our rep even said that he''d get me a job there since I was so attentive to details and information. Heehee.. I have all of you to thank. Who would have thunk that I, after randomly coming across the CELEBRITY RINGS thread, would end up knowing my own share of diamond 411? I''m sooo excited.

On Wednesday, as long as the diamond (.77) doesn''t look too small, we''re gonna go for it!!

By Saturday night, we should have the completed ring. I am soooo stoked and I can''t wait to share my own pics on here - as I''ve been in love with all of yours...

I''m sorry DeeJay... I''m somewhat new to Ps but I was wondering if I was doing something incorrectly....

I noticed that most posts get tons of responses - whereas mine get 1 or 2 at most. Am I doing something wrong or is my post just boring?

=_( I get no love from PSers.

Hi Kiwi, I don''t know ANYthing about the princess shape so I can''t be of much help to you in terms of specs, but the prices you''re being quoted at Robbins Brothers seem a little high for that carat weight in a fancy shape. Are you opposed to buying through an online vendor? It seems like you could be getting much more for your money that way! And most likely a better cut, too...

For example, in a quick Whiteflash search... http://www.whiteflash.com/princess/Princess-cut-diamond-111681.htm

Again, I don''t know what constitutes a good princess, but that one is rated 4 stars (the highest possible for a princess) on their rating system... so presumably a pretty nice stone!

i vaguely remember your last post saying you had to go to robbins brothers because of an exchange or something. You will get a smaller lesser quality ring for the price at robbins brothers, plain and simple. If you went to a more reputable online jeweler like whiteflash or even engagementringsdirect (i think that is what its called) you would get a better price. But at least they are being nice to you. They are usually only nice when they think they have you ready to buy, just keep that in mind.

I do hope you have used what you have learned here to get you a stone that you love! After all thats what is important!

$4200 still seems rather steep. Whiteflash have a .761 G VS1 ACA Princess for $3671 and a new platinum solitaire ring for $570 =$4241. Please have a look so you can compare its dimensions to the one you''re considering at RB.

Okay, so.. this is what I know so far.. it''s a .77 G VS1 GIA cert ELEXESE princess and.. um.. since we already have the ring (it was custom made by them) they are going to switch out the prong to a V shaped platinum peg head instead of the 4 prong round one and then... mount the diamond and the $4100 includes the total including tax (which I''m told is a lot to begin with..)

How much is sales tax for jewelry in CA anyway? Is it the same as regular sales tax?

I''m so excited that I''m no longer $2500 over what most ppl pay for a similar stone. I may be a couple hundred more - but considering I get the lifetime normal wear and tear damage warranty - that is definitely more workable now...

I''m curious how much sales tax is though......

Hmm.... OMG, I can''t wait to see my diamond on Wednesday...

In Torrance CA it''s 8.25%

Thank you ephemery1 ! I will check it out!

That is a much better price including the setting... cant wait to see pictures!

we should have an la get together when charger gets back to see all the new bling!
