Now that I've proposed and she's said yes, (i'll post photos of the proposal as soon as we tell the rest of our friends and family) i can take pictures and look at the stone freely. She loves the ring and I'm now even more interested in the specifics of the stone. I purchased a loupe that will hopefully arrive soon so i'll be able to admire and identify my stone after cleanings and such. i can see how one can easily obsess.

anything interesting that some of you have noticed when viewed with a loupe? i've tried viewing under different light conditions such as halogen (sparkly!), fluorescent, sunlight and even match light in a closet! All are interesting and beautiful in their own way. Can anyone suggest any other neat things? i should try cutting glass??? I'm sooo kidding!...... Are there any other parameters i should be concerned with? if i were looking for something similar would any of you try to improve on anything?

Can i use an ASET even though the stone is mounted? Will the setting be to much of a obstruction?

Should i get an independent appraisal?

Any one use Jewelers Mutual Insurance? Does anyone have any recommendations?

I know there is said to be a tradition in the UK where royal brides honeymooning at Balmoral scratch their initials in a window pane with the diamond in their engagement rings but I wouldn''t recommend trying it.

Loupe - get to know your own stone, learn where any visible inclusions are so you can easily identify your own diamond should you need to.

You can try an ASET but you won''t get the full picture on a mounted diamond, you could try though. You can get an independant appraisal by all means, this can be very useful for insurance purposes.

Jewelersmutual - stone-cold uses them I believe, he will probably be along presently. They are a good company to the best of my knowledge.

I think some expert here mentioned before, cutting glass with diamond might result in chipping of the stone along the cleavage plane if you are so unlucky to find that facet, so don''t try that.

Yap, I use JM, no claims yet... *touch wood*.

I think you would be very hard press to find any inclusion with a loupe at VS1 level. Good luck.

thanks again, i've just read a post by Indecisive, and he feel exactly the way i do. it is nice to have the experts in this community reassure you and tell you that they believe you've done a good job.
i have 15 more days before my return window closes. i'd just like to make sure that i did a decent job with my purchase. i check prices almost everyday and even check for colors F and H for deals. I hope i'm not alone.

Congrats! looks like you have a fine stone. I have gemshield trough Touchstone Insurance. Chubbs is also recommended through Touchstone as well, many here have Chubbs, JM, and Gemshield, others have riders on their home insurance (thats a personal thing - though I don''t recommend just my humble opinion though)
