First post here, but I've been lurking incessantly for the past couple of weeks. PS has been a great resource and I finally decided to register, say hello and make some posts of my own.
For background:
My boyfriend and I have been talking about getting engaged and decided that we would pick the ring together and that he would figure out the proposal on his own. The ring is a large financial decision for him/us and we want to be sure we're both happy with whatever we choose.
We first went to Tiffany and I fell in love with the Lucida, but after doing some searches on Google (which led me to PS), I figured it would be worth it to educate ourselves and figure out how we can get the best bang for our buck without the Tiffany brand and mark-up.
I searched around PS and figured we could do a generic asscher with a Vatche X-Prong for a similar look to the Lucida, but then eventually my asscher searches led me to Kenny's amazing Octavia photos and Jon's videos. Yikes. Game changer.
Soo...I've decided that I would really like an Octavia from GOG/Karl/Yoram. My boyfriend has been discussing the details with David over at GOG who has been very responsive and helpful. This is all very exciting and the idea having a diamond cut just for us feels so special.
What I've discovered is that there are many characteristics and stats of diamonds that can give an online/non-local buyer a lot of confidence in the purchase, but not so much with settings.
How does one assess how secure a setting is? Are all platinum and WG alloys created equal? Are settings typically "resized" for the size of the stone? That is, if a setting has a fairly wide band, then will it be the width stay the same whether the stone is 5x5mm vs 7x7mm?
On top of all of those questions, I was wondering if any of you had any great solitaire setting ideas for an Octavia asscher. My current top choice is the Vatche Royal X-Prong (or something that is very similar). I like that it is modern, simple and has a bit of a thicker band. But I know my preferences so far have been heavily influenced by the Tiffany Lucida, so I wanted to get some outside perspective as well. Nessier posted one with an Asscher here, though that has been modified to have a thinner band: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/asscher-in-custom-vatche-royal-x-prong.120490/
If you've made it this far, thanks for reading this novel!
