Thinking about getting a diamond solitaire necklace for my birthday. Is the criteria as important for chosing a diamond for a necklace as important as for an engagement ring. The oldtimers on this site will remember me as the person who bought and returned 3 stones before selecting a fantastic one. My engagement ring is an H SI1 ideal cut 1.3 FIC. Where if anywhere can I go down in quality??? If I get a J color and set it in platinum - will it look yellow?? Can I go down to an SI2 without noticing the flaws??? Is the symmetry and polish more or less impt??

I would like to understand my parameters before I start loooking for a diamond. I am thinking of a stone around 1.25 cts. As Before, I want the best bang for my buck. Based on the forums opinions, I will adjust my thinking. Thanks in advance. Regards,

I''m no expert but I have gathered a bit of info since I joined...

I believe that because a pendant will not be seen as closely (like by people grabbing your hand to admire your ring) that you can sacrifice a bit of clarity (SI2, for ex) and color (I, J). Cut, of course, remains important so you get that beautiful sparkle!

See the pendant thread for ideas here

i think you can find great value in j color si2 stones, especially for a pendant.

you can look through this thread about j colored stones in platinum. best of luck in your search!

It really depends.
Because of the viewing distance for all practical purpases you can go down in color and clarity but it still has to be "mind clean" to you.
Its really up to you to decide where that point is.

Hi Stephcola!

It really depends on your parameters. Personally, I would seriously consider a J/SI in that size.

Thanks all of you for the info.

Fire and Ice...This one''s for you.... I remember you were a big fan of flourescence. If I did go for a (J) stone in an SI1, should I look for a flourescent stone??? Will it matter in a necklace that will be worn flat (probably bezel set) against my skin???

I have seen many diamond pendants that do not look sparkly at all. I know they are real. Are these cases of bad proportions???
In a bezel set diamond in a pendant, do all the angles make the same difference they do in a ring???
OR...just a bad combination of everything???

Can I go to a larger diameter - 58/59???or a shallower stone 59 ?? Or do all the same rules as before apply.

I will look for an eyeclean J SI1 - but can I also relax the other parameters as well?????

Thanks and regards,

#1. Yes

#2. Yes

#3. Depth below 60% still yields brilliant diamonds given proper angles (try the HCA chart: there''s penty of crown/pavilion combinations that score swell for 50* depth). One of the newsletters on Ideal-Scope.com explains why "BIC" rounds fare better in earrings and pendant. That does not sound like "relaxing the standard" to me, but it could be taken that way if you were thinking of AGS0 standard that is about to be replaced now...

Just my 0.2

Speaking of proportions , if this stone would be out there, I'd call it very fit for a pendant or bezel set ring, and less so for prong setting.

Given that most stones that come with Sarin data are meant to meet the old AGS standard, such a spready HCA ideal might turn out hard to find. From current listings, that 1-2% less depth might add about a tenth of a milimeter - up to you if this is worth the trouble. Say... one 1.18cts round would match the standard size of a 1.25 ideal cut (7mm) and the 6 points saved do not make nearly as much difference as other price factors (EGL report and lack of AGS0 pedigree).

having just upgraded to a much bigger J SI2 from my old H SI1....I am very pleased with it as a stone in a ring...I would not hesitate to go J SI2 for a pendant and have even been thinking that a K SI would suit just fine if the cut was exceptional, that makes all the difference in how the stone looks in terms of sparkle AND color facing up.

stick with a very well-cut J SI that is eye-clean and no one will know the difference. people are amazed my e-ring stone is a J SI if i tell them.

i think a 1.25 J SI would be a fabulous, beautiful pendant! are you thinking a thin bezel setting or the 4 prong? i have to say that i love my .38c regent pendant in a simple 4 prong and plan to upgrade that to closer to 1c within a year or so, my pendant gets much more usage for me than many of my jewelry items.

edited to add: this would be MY pick if i was looking for something like that!

1.27 J SI2 AGS0 round ideal cut stone for $4800 PS price.
ask whiteflash for pictures of stone, certificate to see inclusions, idealscope image and sarin report...but that has stellar numbers and is right up my alley!!!

I wore a Super Ideal 0.75 ct for nearly a year as a pendant. H, SI1, TIC that faced up beautifully white in white gold.

The diamond was bland as a pendant. It would catch the light from time to time but most of the time it was just clear or white looking. I could take the pendant off and lay it on my finger simulating a ring and that puppy would fire off colors like mad.

When I was getting ready to upgrade, I discussed the lack of performance with Brian Gavin at White Flash. He said the neck is really a static position for a diamond. Diamonds can't move and play with light in that position like they can in a ring on your finger or a bracelet on your wrist does. Earrings play with light more than pendants do because of the movement of the head.

Some off makes are beautiful pendant diamonds. I1's with well placed inclusions are worth considering as well. Color will really depend on the rough the diamond was cut from and the quality of the make.

i wonder if maybe more 'fire' makes a difference in pendants...my Regent is a sparkly little dot on my neck and is very lively and sparkly when i see it in the mirror, alot of colored sparkles and i even catch a quick glimpse of arrows sometimes...

but yes a pendant will not scintillate as much to your eye as a ring that is on your hand getting tons of movement every second...also you never see your own pendant on your neck but in a mirror so it's hard to appreciate it like a ring. so just know those two things...but i really adore my regent pendant and from PQ's comments it makes me wonder if maybe something like a slightly off make FIC wouldn't be a more lively, fabulous pendant than a H&A TIC.
