Soldering rings together?

I recently got a 5 stone band to wear with my solitaire. Both rings are platinum and look great together but I have to wear spacers in between as the girdle of one of the stones can easily nick the prongs of my solitaire. I intend to wear these 2 rings as a set so I was wondering if I should get them soldered together... Is there any downside to doing that? Anything to watch out for?

While I'm at it, I might also be interested in asking the jewelers if they could make my solitaire's prongs a little 'pointy' like claw prongs. Any disadvantages to doing that?

My solitaire is from GOG and my 5 stone is from WF. I live in Chicago and would prefer to get this done locally. Any recommendations? Is this such a simple job that I can even walk into a mall store like Zales or something?

Thanks in advance for advice! :))

you'll be sorry ... my wife had exactly the same problem and i bought her a 2mm spacer ring.

I personally don't prefer rings soldered together just because I like the option to mix it up. But that's a personal preference and I don't think there's any downside to doing so (other than that you may want a different look in the future and then have to get them separated).

I don't have any jeweler recommendations for Chicago, just have to tell you I'm jealous you live in my favorite city of all time! :twirl:

Don't do it. Not attractive in my humble opinion rather you wear 5 stone on left hand and engament ring on right hand or the spacer.

I'm not a fan of the look- mostly because I like the option to wear the bands seperately or mix and match. However, I have many friends that have sautered theirs together and been very happy with it. Those are their permenant bands so they don't mix and match as I do. I would personally just get another stacker like a bezel set something and wear as a spacer between th two if you like the look.

Thank you for all the responses. :wavey:

I actually really dislike the look of spacers and I'm not a stacker at all.

Also, I don't intend to mix and match my ER and 5 stone band because I wouldn't wear either by itself and when I travel or take public transport I simply wear a 22k yg band on my ring finger.

So I really just need to know if soldering has any intrinsic downsides to it (like it spoils the metal or the rings themselves or it's impossible to separate rings in future or hard to clean etc) and what to watch out for regarding workmanship etc. Also jeweler recommendations.

As far as aesthetics go, I know for sure I dislike the spacer look. I have never seen what soldered rings look like except on the JA website but I suppose any local jeweler should have a soldered set I can look at? Maybe I'll go visit C D Peacock tonight...

Would really appreciate responses from PS tradespeople as well. :))

liaerfbv: Chicago is perfection. I love my city very, very much and I'm glad you think it's awesome.

You can always try it and it can be undone if you like it. One rec: Orrington Jewelers in Winnetka. I would like your rings w/o the spacers too, btw. Best of luck!

I would check w/ both vendors 1st to see if doing so would void your warranties w/ either one of them if you used an outside party.

motownmama, thanks for the rec! I will give them a call tomorrow.

mom2boys, I hadn't thought of that, so I did a live chat with WF and they told me if they did the soldering, it would be under warranty but I would have to sign a waiver reg the ER (as it is not from WF). Cost will be 100 bucks and shipping to and fro. Plus time spent sending and receiving. I need to think about going with WF vs local... Hmm. I'll get quotes from local jewelers this weekend. Thanks for responding.

Mine are soldered. I never mix and match wedding bands, I only have one. If I don't want to wear my e-ring, I have a RHR eternity band I can wear on that finger, since my wedding band is connected. The soldering keeps my rings aligned so I don't have to chase 2 spinning rings, that are going in the opposite direction. I can't even see the soldering, because it is in the inside of the band. It looks like 2 rings from all views. Sounds like for your situation soldering would work great.

I think if you put your five stone next to your solitaire your going to drown out your solitaire. I think you need that spacer in there to break the two apart. I am speaking from experience because I have a five stone as well that I have worn with my pear.

I had 2 rings soldered together and then had them undone...it did not do any damage to either ring...I have thought of doing this to my solitaire and 5 stone, but I like to wear my 5 stone by itself so I haven't done it...I don't like spacers and don't wear one, however I seldom wear mine together much anymore...I tend to wear my solitaire with a plain band...but every once in awhile I like to bling it up..lol...my recommendations is if you will only wear these 2 together and will not wear them separate then this is the best way to keep them from damaging each other.
