I recently came across this name and tried to educate mysellf. From what I understand, they are ideal cut symmetric, H and A diamonds with more facets. To a lay person like me this sounds good and should result in a brilliant stone especially in larger stones. If this were so straight forward, all larger stones would be cut this way I assume. Obviously my knowledge is poor. I did try to find out advantages and disadvantages of this type of cut and found little information. Can anyone help with the pros and cons arguements of this cut?

Solasfera has 10 sections instead of 8 so the leakage is reduced.

It is a different yet very beautiful look.

Some people who are accostomed to the "standard" 8 section round brilliant say they look too busy and may be preferred in larger stones.

My opinion is a princess or radiant or pear has a more busy look yet are lovely.
So why can''t a round have more but smaller facets and virtual facets?

Try to see them in person. They are truly lovely IMHO.

What size stone are you considering? I''m asking because I remember reading somewhere on PS that the additional facets enhance the beauty of a stone in the larger sizes (> 1 carat) than they do in smaller stones.

the plan at present is for a 2.5 to 3 carat diamond.

I think a Solasfera in that size range would be drop-dead gorgeous. I have not seen the Solasfera diamond in person, but a jeweler in my city carries the Star 129 brand (which also have additional facets) and they are beautiful in the larger sizes (they are beautiful in the smaller sizes, too, don't get me wrong, but I think the larger carat sizes show off the unusual cut more). Please let us know how we can help you, and post lots of pictures when you get the stone!!

cuts like this come into their own as size increases.

Good advice all around. Just some things I''d add and an answer to a question you raised.

"Why aren''t all larger diamonds cut to Solasfera''s? ... That is because they are a proprietary cut.

While modified rounds cut for light performance do come into their own in the larger sizes they are also very beautiful in smaller sizes too. The appearance and optics are maintained but in the larger sizes the facets (and contrast patterns) are easier to resolve with your eyes.

Moh just to add to your comment regarding "more facets eliminating leakage" ... Your statement is true however it isn''t necessarily the additional facets that are eliminating leakage. 57 facets can be cut to eliminate leakage around the halves. What makes the Solasfera unique or distinct is that if you cut a 57 facet ideal cut to eliminate all leakage you must paint the half facets which will ding the stone in GIA''s (and AGS to a lesser extents) cut grading systems. Solasfera eliminates the leakage without painting or digging by adding an additional half facet to the crown.

End results: Painting in 57 facet rounds eliminates leakage on the pavilion but causes the crown to drawn in more light off the horizon as opposed to from above, thus resulting in more greens in ASET and generally increased darkness. The additional half facets in Solasfera result in the elimination of leakage on the pavilion and at the same time effectively grab light from above (particularly the 45-75 degree angular spectrum resulting in a saturation of more reds in the half facet regin producing more brightness in those areas of the diamond.

Peace,
Jon
