SO UPSET!!!!

I just need to know what my options are.. i am SO frustrated. My fiance and i fell in love with my e-ring but it was in a jewelry store in NJ and we had just moved to PA. we looked high and low for another ring but we always went back to the one in NJ. A month ago my now fiance bought the ring and the jeweler assured us that they would work with us being that we were so far away.

last week i noticed that my stone was moving around a tiny bit. i took it to a local jeweler and he told us that the diamond had not been set correctly. that when they angle cut the prongs for the diamond to sit in, one was cut to low and the diamond does not even touch that one prong. this diamond is a family stone so even though it is fully insured it cannot be replaced..... the local jeweler told me that the diamond was secure, but if it were him he would want to know that the person doing work for him was not doing a good job. he thought that we should call the guy in nj and mention the issue to him. FI and i both agreed that we cannot be making a 3.5 hour trip to North jersey so that they can fix the problem.. sending the ring in the mail scares me because again, this is a family stone. the local jeweler said that he could fix it and send the jeweler in NJ a bill...

well we called the jersey jeweler last night and i ended up IN TEARS. he was SCREAMING at me and telling me that i was a liar. that i caught the ring on something.. jarring the stone loose and that we can "bring it by so he can see if i am lying or not". my FI go on the phone and tried to reason with the guy saying that they had charged us to have the diamond set and it was not done correctly.. the conversation ended with the jeweler HANGING UP ON US!!!

should i just get the ring fixed here and eat the 50 dollars?? its really not about the money.. its more like we paid a SH*@t load of money and it should have been done correctly...

It must be so stressful! Especially to have your original jeweler YELL at you?! no no no....no.

Personally, I would file a complaint against the BBB and eat the $50 and have the local jeweler fix it. That''s how I would handle it. Have the least amount of stress possible.

cbs, why are you even asking the question? I ask because WHY in the hell would you ever consider using a jeweler who yelled at you and accused you of lying and hung up on you? Just let the local guy fix it for you. It''s $50. It''ll cost you more than that to insure the ring and ship it to the crazy dude, right? If it makes you feel better, take macro photos of the problem and email them to the original guy just to show him what you''re talking about. But for godssake, dont use someone who''s verbally abusive to you. You''ll only be in for more of the same. People seem to do this all the time, they have a problem and continue using the first problem jeweler and they keep having more and more problems. Cut your losses and move on now. You''ll be happier you did!

Yes, spend the $50 and save yourself any additional stress over dealing with this completely unethical and abusive jewler. You cannot "win" with someone who has such a complete disregard for his customers or customer service, and this sort of abusive attitude.

File the complaint, and have the local jeweler fix it. I''m really sorry your experience turned out like this. It''s one thing to "hold" the title of "jeweler", it''s another thing to actually "earn" it.

But I''m wondering if its reasonable to expect that they would believe the word of another jeweler and pay for a repair done by someone else without ever seeing the ring/damage itself.

Usually a jeweler might examine the ring & repair it. It''s not the jeweler''s fault you are far away. And even if they set the stone wrong as the new jeweler contends -- they will probably want to fix the work themselves rather than pay inflated prices for someone else to fix it. How can they know if it will be fixed properly? Who *then* would be responsible for any further problems with the setting. The new jeweler or the old jeweler? What if the new jeweler messed it up further? You can see that its a complicated situation being so far away. A vague promise of things being "worked out" over long distance is different than a meeting of the minds when it comes to specific ways things will be handled. Live & learn I guess.

Personally, I''d just pay the $50 & hope the setting is fine. If the setting keeps giving you problems I''d return *in person* to the original jeweler and ask for a refund or trade.

Oh heck no on dealing with the mean jeweler again. No way! That is just awful. Give your business to someone who deserves it instead. So sorry you are going through this.

cbs - I am so sorry that that happened to you! Definitely file a complaint with the BBB. And definitely go with the local jeweler. As previously mentioned, it would cost more to insure and ship it then to just have the local guy reset it.

OMG.. *hugs*.. I totally understand where you are coming from, as I had a very similar thread of my own here.

I would pay the $50 to get it fixed by the reputable jeweller, but get a full receipt for the work you get done.

I would also complain to the BBB(?) as suggested by other posters, as it is absolutely unacceptable for the original jeweller to scream at you, no matter how much he may disagree with your opinion. This is simply not professional behaviour.

I would also try & take photos using a loupe held up to the lens of your camera, on the macro setting. If you look at my thread I managed to get an awesome photo of a bodged prong (which was also not touching the diamond) in this way. It might take a bit of practise & several attempts, but it''s worth the effort.

I would write a letter to the original jeweller, enclosing copies of the photos as evidence of their poor workmanship, and a copy of the receipt for the repair work. You never know, they might pay for the repair. If they do, great.. if not, at least you proved you were right about their awful setting job.

I know exactly how upsetting this is for you. The great news is that it''ll only cost $50 to put it right.. and at least you haven''t lost your irreplaceable diamond. Look on the bright side.

You''ve also found a trustworthy jeweller who you can build a great relationship with for the future.

Glad you found a reputable jeweler in PA. You''ll need to establish a relationship with a local jeweler for things such as this. Pay the $50 and report the NJ jeweler to the BBB. What he did to you is outrageous!!!!

Anyway... my issue didn''t result in my jeweler yelling at me, but I can assure you if it did there would for sure be a complaint to the BBB. I also wouldn''t go back.

Definitely have it fixed locally. I mean - why would you want the same guy that mucked up your ring to begin with attempt to do the repair, especially after the abuse he gave you!

I am so glad that you repeorted them to the BBB! Hopefully it will teach them a lesson about how to treat others and also let other people see what kind of individuals they are dealing with and hopefully will keep shoppers far far away from thier store....Good Luck!

I am sorry that this man treated you the way that he did, that is not at all professional. I think that you did the right thing by reporting him to the BBB, and I would also agree that I would not return to his shop for the repair (or anything else for that matter).
