So tired of hearing that federal workers are so bad

Everyone forgets that they are people. They are working in a messy bureaucracy. They used to have job security. Imagine going to work everyday, wondering if it's your last due to no fault of yours.

Well. Our newly elected president—whom many here voted for and vehemently defend—is responsible for that narrative.

Some of us work crazy hours with few COTS resources because we have to get the job done. sometimes there's no COTS and it has to be made to some very strict specs. Because of what I do, I don't get overtime and when I work 70 hours a week, I still only get paid for 40 hours. I do it because the work needs to be done, not because I'm sitting on my @ss.

And I make a heck of a lot less in public sector work than private.

Many of us do the job that needs to be done because we believe in it, and even before all this, its not always easy work with all the crap we deal with, the rules we have to follow, the already stringent unannounced audits that get done for many areas and the high standards in which that work has to be done.

Its not always perfect, nothing ever is, but we do our best.

End of the day; what I do is work that benfits the public, no matter who they are or how they vote. The apps I create get hundreds of thousands of hits weekly, during covid one of my apps hit millions of hits on a weekly basis.

These are not typical RIF's, these are illegal firings. If it were done the in the proper way using the proper methods, internally it would not be this much upheaval. When it was done during Mr. Clintons presidency it more methotical and not this slash and burn which weakens the necessary services that the fed provides. This is the difference between what happened then and whats going on now.

Anyway to keep myself out of trouble here, and for those wanting to go more in depth, join bluesky because lot of us talk over there when its possible.

@Arcadian LOVE Bluesky! There is so much information sharing, with intelligent, educated, strong people!

Many work hard every day but it seems everyone likes to jump on the bandwagon when complaining.

a different country but i was just on hold for 47 minutes from 8.o7 am Friday with a govt dept
i grinned and bore it not complaining to the lady who finally answered, there may have only been here answering the phone :(2

I disagree, he is doing his job, perhaps not in the way everyone wants it to be done. Yes, he ordered the review of federal workers, but when some complained about it (and yes there are some that need to go) everyone jumped on the bandwagon and lumps all federal workers into lazy, needless, scammers.

I happen to be a federal worker of 34 years for DOD, so my job is detailed and I take it seriously. I work hard every day for our service members. I submit weekly reports, monthly reports, quarterly reports and now the 5 things I did last week report on my job. Needless to say, that is only part of it. We have so many reports that detail exactly what we are doing.

I will be the first to admit there are some out there that take advantage of things and get away with it, but it is not a widespread problem that everyone seems to think it is.

So now some of us complain about an additional reporting on what we are doing and we get called useless and told we don't deserve our jobs.

There are departments that are short-staffed, hence the waiting for someone to pick up the line (we are in a hiring freeze), which is unfortunate but cannot be helped. This is not a new occurrence with Trump being elected either.

Let's just please think before we speak. Federal workers are not all bad.

@Arcadian I am not sure what BLUESKY is but I will check it out.

I worked DOD 10 years ago, when they asked folks to voluntarily give up my level of security clearance I totally did and that was so freeing. Then a few years after that I transferred to a different agency which allowed me to be in a position of permanent telework, which meant I could move to a place that I could afford. No regrets, and thank you for all you do my friend.
