So that was not the diagnosis I was expecting...

I'm so sorry to hear that, Ame. I hope you'll feel better very soon. :wavey:

You are the 3rd person this month that I "know" that got it.
There is a strain going around that shots over ~10 years ago offers virtually no protections according to a friends doctor.
I had my booster in November of 2011.

Ame, so sorry to hear this. What a frustrating illness to have! You must be so sore from all of that coughing. :(sad

As a side - you may have helped me. DS has a nasty cough (he's coughed to the point of gagging and vomiting a few times) with minor runny nose and other cold symptoms. When he's not coughing, he's totally fine. He's on a nebulizer because the doctor wasn't happy with how his lungs sounded and he's on antibiotics. So, there probably isn't much else they would do for him but he's been around other small children A LOT. He goes for a follow up in the morning so I'm going to mention it. I would feel AWFUL if we passed that to someone else. ;(

I'm glad to hear you're on the up and up. I hope you continue to see improvement.

That's possible that it's what he has, sadly. I thought it was bronchitis/the plague, and within a couple days I felt like I was drowning in snot. I couldn't breathe and I was freaking a little too much. But that's kind of how it is, when you are not coughing, you're "ok" a little stuffy maybe and hoarse, but then you get a jag. For me, it's the worst at bedtime from laying down and overnight, and then for the first few hours in the morning. I have a bruise from smacking my forehead off the faucet in the bathroom sink to have my puking issue (having the faucet on helps it go down the drain fast and the coldness feels good). My chest, back and neck are absolutely killing me, and my head just pounds, esp when I cough and laugh. I am typically that jerk that does go to work with a cold, because I never was really able to stay home, due to workload, but now that I can afford a day or two off I am glad I did.

I assume he's on a Zpack? That's the typical medication. Tomorrow is my last dose, so hopefully I can get it together. My coworker thinks I need to stay home another day (she's a mom!) and so does my husband, in part because my boss smokes in our office, and I will seriously not be able to handle it yet.

DH and I just went and had lunch at that Noodles Co place, and thankfully we went when there was no one there. I am supposedly not really contagious but I don't want to risk it. I might head to the store and get more albuteral and stuff, I have to get new toothbrushes and lip balms too, since I used them whn I was still contagious and she doesn't want me to reinfect.

Ame, I'm sorry. This stuff absolutely sucks! (It hit me hard on Feb 16 and I'm still dealing with it)

Take it super slow even as you start to feel better. I made the mistake of spending 15 minutes outside (on a moderately warm, mostly dry day) after something like the 4th week and spent the next several days even sicker. I'm still coughing (not nearly as bad) and my ribs still hurt. I coughed so bad that I got bruising & swelling where my ribs come together in front (get checked if this happens, you can actually cough hard enough to do damage to ribs!)

If you have a Whole Foods in your area, send your DH to pick you up a few bottles of Chest Ease (or the 365 brand equivalent) -- it really helped me feel a lot better. You can take it every two hours (basically just honey and herbs) and won't interfere with anything the dr gave you.

Feel better!

:errrr:

Ame, I hope you start feeling better soon!!! I had pneumonia last year and it was miserable, and pertussis sounds so much worse even in adults  How scary that the vaccinations are ineffective so often!

One for good luck -

I hope you feel better soon, Ame.

I actually have a lot of the same symptoms as you, but it's due to to chronic sinus issues. Just curious, and it's probably a moot point because you have a diagnosis, but do you suffer from sinus infections as well? Reading what you've been through, I wondered if any of this could be contributed to your sinuses not draining properly.

Sorry to hear that you arent well. I have heard that can be a miserable sickness. I saw on the news about a month ago that it was coming back around after being gone for so long. I hope you feel better very soon. I hope your nephew does end up with it either.

I never got vaccinated for it. Back in the doctor refusing treatment thread I went into it, but my mom refused the vaccination for me when I was a baby so of course I never got the booster either.

Like someone else said, childhood sickness put an adult down. I cant imagine how it would be to have a baby that couldnt breathe though. At least as an adult you know how to try and get all the snot out.

Thanks all.

I might send DH to the Whole Paycheck for the ChestEase. He works nearish to one of ours. Ive been sucking on Burts Bees drops and taking spoons of honey.

The taking it slow part for me is going to be hard. I am so not good at just sitting still and relaxing. I tried going to Target today, and it's like 90 outside, and now I am wiped out.

Not really. I spent the better part of the first 20 years of my life with a constant case of strep, and occasionally got sinus infections, I RARELY get those, but I do get them. I haven't had one in a few years though.

I'm sorry you have to go through this. It sounds very unpleasant. Get well soon, Ame. :wavey:

:wavey: Ame, - how are you feeling? Any better now? it's been a few extra days on medication - can you breathe easier and is the coughing slowing down?

Aw, thanks for asking!!!

The majority of the daytime episodes have stopped. I haven't puked during the day in a couple days thankfully. The night time and first thing in the morning is still pretty heavy. But as long as I am awake, sitting upright/standing, I am generally hanging in there. I know I've overdone it a few times trying to run my errands after work though. I stayed home Monday and half of Tuesday, but worked the full days Wed and Thus. Im at work today. My boss smokes in the office (EW) so I have my office door closed because it cuts it down.

I am finally starting to try to eat again. But I haven't got much appetite. Which is great. except that Im not losing any weight!

Glad you are on the mend! Really, your boss smokes at work? Wow - here in Ontario, there are no smoking laws everywhere ---- that just surprises me that people still smoke at work. All what you get used to I suppose!

Wow - you were REALLY hit by this. I can't imagine the discomfort - ugh! And no weight loss---that's just down right UNFAIR! ;))

Speedy recovery ahead for the tail end of it! Maybe a new trinket would help you recover faster??? oh... I'm pretty sure that is a cure the medical world has not yet discovered! Hang in there!

I think if my ring is good, that will be a worthy trinket!!!

The doctor warned me how this would go, I wasn't totally unprepared. It just sucks!

Yes he smokes in the office. We do have laws, he just doesn't care and they don't really enforce it, esp not here. Its annoying as hell. I HATE the smell of smoke. While he is trashy on his own, I generally do equate smoking to trashy people. I just do. I have no idea why. But I do. And he makes my skin crawl beyond just the smoking.

Oh, Ame, that sounds awful! I'm a little worried now as I recently saw it first hand for myself....
Was just on a 4hr plane ride from SF over the weekend with a young girl sitting directly behind me who clearly has a bad case of it  It was disgusting but also just downright inconsiderate to the child and the rest of the passengers, I thought, to bring this poor girl aboard such a long flight :nono:

I am not a germphobic person by any stretch, but I was sitting there just envisioning the germs hopping over the seat and showering me. Not to mention the fact that I'm sure they were recycled throughout the entire plane.

I got the vaccination when I was a kid, but no boosters since. And thus, I'm a little freaked.

THAT would bother me. I hope she had her mouth covered but surely not. I mean I still sound disgusting, but I've finished my medication so now it's just gross. But if I had to get on a plane, I'd be covering my mouth up so that it wasn't going all over when I breathe.

My doctor said it was all over the place. Im now really insane about washing my hands. I was at the galleria this weekend and also frontenac and I went in BBW and washed my hands and used hand gel constantly.

I'm so sorry to hear that you are sick and hope you feel better soon. I know it is not much, but look on the bright side that so far your nephew has had no symptons.

THAT is absolutely the silver lining. I would be devastated if he had it.

Right! That'd be the appropriate/normal way to handle it. However, this child was probably around 2yrs old and subsequently not very concerned with the rest of her environment. But I was this close to turning around and asking her mother (in a curt tone) to at least attempt to cover her child's nose and mouth  After all, the child sat on her mother's lap the entire way!
