I have Pertussis. I am dead serious, not a joke. I got my shots in November before my nephew was born though my doctor is telling me that 25-30% of people don't get full immunity? Seriously? Why have it then??? I called my sister IMMEDIATELY after they told me on Friday, on my way to the pharmacy for my meds. I had asked my doctor what to tell her so she could prevent him from getting it since I have been around him a LOT in the last month, which is the incubation period...so weird. Thankfully his pedi decided for preventive antibiotics just in case. He's so far shown no symptoms...if its this bad in ME, a grownass woman I can't even imagine a little baby. That would be so hellaciously horrible.

Anyway...This is the first day I've felt "ok" and my doctor said I can start going out again, I went and got my McDonalds hamburgers (Seriously, the only food I can manage to keep down, besides my chicken soup...I risked it twice and that was really...bad!) and some fresher air, after I lysoled the whole house, then I lysoled the car when I got home.

I don't know how I will stand 6-8 more weeks of this coughing til I puke nonsense. It's worst at bedtime and in the morning, and I guess the bright side is that I don't really WANT to eat.

Oh, no! I hope the next several weeks go by FAST for you, Ame.

At least you can treat it now that you have a diagnosis, right?

I had pertussis as a child. I don't really remember much other than feeling like I just couldn't stop coughing.

Healthy dust and hugs and lots of McD's hamburgers to you, dear!

feel for you.
i had mumps as an adult...on both sides.
hurt like shell.

actually, i think "kids" diseases are easier on kids than on adults.......

take care of yourself. it will get better.

My husband is thinking that the hamburger thing is so hilarious. When we would get the flu as kids, that was the first food we got to eat after a cracker or toast, plain usually, and a quarter at a time, til we kept it down.

Yea I am doing my best to treat it, I had to go buy the meth-kind of Sudafed from the pharmacy because she said that's the best decongestant for this particular illness, besides being on the antibiotic. I also now have an albuteral inhaler (and another refill to fill on that one) as well. I have to take that and the Sudafed every 4 hours (I have woken up on a jag a few times, and took the inhaler overnight). I was shocked that was the diagnosis. I expected bronchitis, I mean I thought that's what it was.

The coughing is worst night and morning, but during the day it's just a random tickle and then Im going for a while, and gasping and gagging. It's ...lovely. lol

My mom said I had mumps as a kid. I have no recollection of that though.

So bizarre, but I am trying to relax. I did spend a little time today cleaning a little around my bed, I've stripped the bed the last three days and washed the sheets again, and then today I did my desk and the kitchen. Anywhere I normally AM. I have used like 3 cans of Lysol just on everything and in the air trying to kill it. DH had pleurisy as a kid, so anytime he gets a cold the cough lasts an eternity, so we're keeping an eye on his cough since he had a cold a while back and it's still going. I almost asked for meds for him.

That is so weird Ame!

What were your symptoms when it first started? How did they test and diagnose that?

That is funky . . .

I'm sorry you have this! :((

So sorry to hear, I hope you feel better soon!

Go enjoy some hamburgers and get some rest 8)

I started with a sore throat--very sudden. And then within 12 hours I had a face full of snot and a chest full. I was up hacking up snot for three nights and by Friday I was like suffocating or drowning in snot. I couldn't breathe. I was coughing so hard that I'd puke, usually just snot. And I was gasping and panicking bec I just couldn't stop coughing and gasping. The episodes now are not as often but still as bad. When I go to bed I just hack and gag and puke for like an hour.

They do bloodwork to confirm it but they can usually diagnose just hearing the cough and your chest.

Oh no I'm sending you healing vibes!!!

Oh man ame, that sounds painful and really scary - sorry you're dealing with this and I hope you're completely better very soon!

I hope your recovery goes quickly.

And, I hope you can eat more than burgers soon.

Lol I have a few in the fridge to heat. I'm not really hungry, silver lining and all.

It's definitely weird. Painful and miserable. But hopefully I'll have fewer episodes over the next few weeks

Oh my gosh, whooping cough is so scary! I'm sorry Ame. DH and I got our booster before our son was born, just like you did. I had no idea that it only works in 75% of people!

Hope you get better fast. Your nephew has probably already had his first round of vaccines, so hopefully he'll be okay.

I'm sorry, hope you are better soon.

Oh lady...get well soon!!!

Oh wow! I hope you feel better soon!

Thanks!

The fact that it didn't provide me full immunity is so freaky. But the little guy is doing fine so far.

I'm so sorry Ame...I hope you start feeling better very soon!! And I hope your dear nephew and dh remain in the clear. Sending healing dust your way!

Yikes, that sounds terrible!!! Hope you feel better soon!

Yuck Ame, thats aweful! Sorry you have to deal with this, dust to you for fast healing and your family to stay healthy.

:wavey: Here's another adult that doesn't get immunity!
I had pertussis twice (at 4 y.o. and at 15 y.o.), mumps twice (at 8 y.o. and at 16 y.o.) and chickenpox three times (at 9 y.o, at 15 y.o and at 28 y.o.) ...and they really hurt more as adults!
I hope you'll get better soon.

Hope you feel better soon Ame.

Oh Ame you poor, poor thing!! Sending tons of healthy good vibes your way!!!

Yikes! Take it easy and I hope that you feel better soon!

Sounds very uncomfortable. I hope you get well soon.

Oh man! Twice for each would suck!!!

Thanks everyone. The morning is the worst, followed by bedtime.

You are the 3rd person this month that I "know" that got it.
There is a strain going around that shots over ~10 years ago offers virtually no protections according to a friends doctor.
