Has anybody seen these? They are pretty cool, the Garland Lamp by Tord Boontje. This lamp is in the permanent collection of the Moma, and he's well known in industrial design circles. The lamp is considered important because of the concepts behind it; 2D to 3D design, consumer controlled outcome, a design that's whimsical and spontaneous, etc.

It comes as a big flat sheet of thin metal, with the flowers cut out of it, and it's literally a garland you assemble around the lamp base. DH got me 3 for my BDay, to hang over the bar.

Here is a link to a movie showing assembly; http://www.artecnicainc.com/Products/Lighting/Garland_Light/Garland

Don't worry, I know they're not to everyone's taste, but I like them very much. And I wanted to share because they are pretty funky. If you like this kind of stuff, I can provide links to other interesting contemporary pieces.

I love them! They look gorgeous in your beautiful home - they'd look very out of place in my zoo though.

I've always lived those lamps! And they are perfect in your home!

C'mon, this is that same chicken you posted yesterday!

I never understand what you are saying... Does it mean something?

Anyway, ummm helloooo!!!! I luuuuurve it!!!! I always love contemporary, modern lighting fixtures! And I love your's! Did it come in any different colors? I also love the ones with the metal work wrapped around the bulb. The very industrial look.
But like JG, it would look terrible in my house! So I don't own any... Sad...

I love them iLander!!! So cool and chic!!! :appl: :appl: :appl:
Most of our lamps/overhead lighting is from the art deco (1920's,30's-early 40's) time period and while I love them I also just love the contemporary time period and these lamps are gorgeous!!!

WOW -- those are awesome!

Do they come with the base part or do you supply your own base?

Wow, very cool! They look great in your home, which is lovely btw. I'm curious - in the pic they look like they hang pretty low - do they, or is it just the angle of the pic?

Gorgeous!!! I love them! :appl:

Are they easy to take apart in order to change the light bulb?

Sooooo...I looked them up because I really, really love them. I love them enough that I'm considering ripping out the overhead light in my bedroom and putting one of these in instead.

Thanks to my very short research process, I can tell everyone that they do come in different colors (black, white, and bronze - plus I'm pretty sure I saw 24kt gold!). They come with a base, a pendant of sorts, just a plain hanging bulb, and you wrap it all up yourself. Cleaning would be easy - pressurized air, blast out the dust! I think taking it apart is as easy or as difficult as you make it - wrap it up tightly in a mess and it will be hard, but loose arrangement with perhaps some strategically placed holes for lights/hands, and it would be fairly uncomplicated.

DH is going to get back from his gig tonight with lots of news about how I've been mentally spending our money all evening!

That is pretty cool. Was the assembly difficult?

Thanks for doing the research I was too lazy to do!

OK, I'm officially 100% in love with these!

What about the idea of layering them? Maybe somehow wrapping a bronze and silver together? I'm also a little concerned about the brightness of the lightbulb coming through harshly... what about using a wad of Christmas tree lights, or somehow weaving the Christmas tree light strand into the the vines?

VL is referring to a chicken picture I posted in CS yesterday, in response to an egg-shaped colored stone. VL is the master of the inside joke.

They come in white, gold, silver, and black.

They come with a base and cord, but we thought the white cord looked cheap (it's flat, with the ridged edge, like an extension cord), so we used the round, black wires that were already there from the previous lamps. DH rewired the bulb socket onto the wire. We got up on ladders to spray paint the base of the wires, which are flush against the ceiling, which used to be copper colored and are now white.

When all is said and done, the lamps are about 12 inches top to bottom. They are fairly small in scale, which is great for over the bar. The height is adjusted by where you cut the cord, or how you hang it.

You kinda have to stick your hand in there, carefully, and ease the bulb out. I did this, since I decided clear bulbs were nicer after we tried them with the frosted and didn't like it.

I didn't think of the compressed air, thank you!

They are a smallish scale, about 12 inches tall, about 8 inches wide. But it depends on the arrangement, you can change it.

HERE THEY ARE, ON THE CHEAP! http://www.ebay.com/itm/Tord-Boontjes-Garland-light-shade-by-Habitat-flower-lamp-pendant-chandelier-/280947476297?pt=UK_Lampshades&var=&hash=item4169c64749

DH didn't like the colors on ebay, so he paid full price :nono: for white ones.

No, it was a breeze. Because of the tendrils, and clingy aspect of all the metal parts (like tangling a fine jewelry chain), it just wants to stick together. If you click through on the link in my OP, you can see from the video how simple it is.

Thanks, you guys, for all the kind words! :wavey:

I was afraid they would be met with deafening silence . . .

If someone has a tall area, with more room than I have over my bar, these are more of his lamps that are pretty cool, IMHO. Be careful, though, I think some are shades only. If you google his name, you'll find full line dealers who offer the light kit. Clear bulbs look best, BTW.

I love them too, iLander, & I'm definitely not a contemporary decor person! Those just look plain purty to me. I'd love them in a big bathroom! Or anywhere.

Ah, ok! I wasn't sure of the size from the pic. They look so nice!
