Has anybody seen these? They are pretty cool, the Garland Lamp by Tord Boontje. This lamp is in the permanent collection of the Moma, and he's well known in industrial design circles. The lamp is considered important because of the concepts behind it; 2D to 3D design, consumer controlled outcome, a design that's whimsical and spontaneous, etc.
It comes as a big flat sheet of thin metal, with the flowers cut out of it, and it's literally a garland you assemble around the lamp base. DH got me 3 for my BDay, to hang over the bar.
Here is a link to a movie showing assembly; http://www.artecnicainc.com/Products/Lighting/Garland_Light/Garland
Don't worry, I know they're not to everyone's taste, but I like them very much. And I wanted to share because they are pretty funky.
If you like this kind of stuff, I can provide links to other interesting contemporary pieces.
