....a GIA cert .72 vs2 E......and from the study I saw on this site and the general consensis, it seems as though for the same price I would be getting a E vs2 .82ct in actual quality!

Seems that due to the percieved value of EGL diamonds I could really get a great deal on the diamond!

Should I not take this approach?

Also...the site I am thinking of using will inspect the diamond theirselves before giving it to me to verify both the appraisal value and if the diamond fits to spec.

your thoughts?

sure, you could definitely do that and get a good deal. however, the best cut diamonds aren''t usually sent to EGL.

You should see if your place will send stuff to an independent appraiser... that way, they could tell you which is a "better deal" - factoring in stuff like cut, etc.

Report: EGL
Shape: Round
Carat: 0.81
Color: D
Clarity: VS2
Depth: 60
Table: 57
Girdle: M-
Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Excellent
Culet: None
Fluorescence: None
Measurements: 5.92-5.95X3.60

and is listed under round ideal cut diamonds

and sorry I just realized I put .82 and not .81

Kristy I just saw your post and got this off their site.

"After our inspection and analysis we send it to a local independent appraiser for formal verification."

crown and pavilion angles?

it doesn''t say...I am sending them an e-mail asking if it''s an EGL USA certed diamond..and asking what the crown and pavilion angles are.

I called the guy...he REALLY didn't want to sell the EGL diamond...stating he had a horrid experience with EGL. Also he stated they wouldnt offer an upgrade for the diamond and that the diamond would be my diamond for life

I explainded that I would find it acceptable even if the diamond was a F in color(since I couldnt tell a difference)

Anywho long story short he is getting the cert from his vendor and asking him if he thinks its a preaty diamond and will be sending the cert photo copied So I will have the pavillion and crown specs soon.

If you want to adjust pricing for EGL USA and GIA/AGS, just drop a color for the EGL stone.

So, if it's a EGL D and it's GIA F, you lose.

Treepop-

I just got my engagement ring a week and a half ago (I'm by no means an expert!) and it's a .818 carat.

For what it's worth - when I got it, I was *shocked* how great it looks in comparison to the "normal" diamonds at the jewelry store. I really think it is because it's such a good cut. I got it from Whiteflash - it's one of their "A cut above" diamonds.

Just for reference, it's a G VS2, and I paid around $3600 for it. In total, with an 18KT gold setting with a 6 prong platinum head, I paid $4116.

I think it can be kind of hard to find diamonds in this size range...

Good luck!
Kristy

ETA: I thought the G color would bother me... because I had looked at a bunch of loose G's in several jewelry stores and hated the yellow color. I've tried to see yellow in this baby, and - I just can't. So, don't be *too* nervous to go down on color with a really well cut diamond.
