Obviously I have no idea what i am doing. I have read everything on this site as well as hundreds of threads trying to figure this stuff out, and while I feel more informed, and this sight is a mountain of information, I feel like I am on information over load now.

If any one can give me an opinion on the below stone. I am trying to keep the entire package at about $4000, and want something about .9 carats. I realize that means making compromises at differnt points to come up with the best stone for me. I was thinking around H, VS2 for the stone. The specs are:

carat: 0.90
Color H
Clarity VS2
Depth 60.3%
Table 61% GIA
Girdle: stk-tk
culet: no
Symetry:vg
Polish: ex
Flouresencs:slt
Measurements:6.17x6.24x3.74
$3396SP
GIA cert

I found this using the PS search. I know the flouresence is a little high but from what i read this should actually help the H color(Y/N). What about the cut, should I really stick to finding something better?

With trying to stick to my budget i am trying to find the best combination, If it looks like I am compromising on the wrong things please let me know my mistakes, so i can get the best ring possible.

I am also looking for a simple classic low set single solitaire setting, if any one has seen something nice outside of the stuller solstice please inform me.

Again, any advise would be more than appreciated

and thanks in advance

Cut is the most important component for a beautiful diamond and should never be compromised on. This diamond isn''t an Ideal Cut - it has a very large table, also we need the crown and pavillion angles to help judge cut quality. This diamond might be attractive and a nice make, you need to decide if you want a true superideal whose cut quality and beauty is second to none, or a ''nice make'' as previously stated which looks pretty and sparkly but whose crafting could have been better.

Blue flourescence has many fans ( of which I am one) and it is thought that it can help a diamond to face up whiter, some would say that faint or slight is unnoticeable, however I have a diamond with faint blue and I can see it and love it!

You can drop the colour and clarity specs considerably to broaden your options if you wish and still have a clean and white looking diamond. You could drop comfortably to an SI grade, SI1 or even SI2 and I or J colour, with flourescence so much the better in my opinion. As I said in another thread earlier, it depends on what is important to you, dropping colour and clarity to get more size etc, or having higher specs on these, neither way is wrong it is a matter of preference.

I would read the tutorials on cut and look around and compare online. Time spent learning will be well spent, if you get a well cut diamond you can enjoy forever you will bless the time and effort you spent on this project.

Read the tutorial, study up on cut quality, define which colour and clarity specs are important and acceptable to broaden your options and start looking. Also stick to AGS or GIA certed diamonds to make finding an accurately graded diamond easier.

Hope this helps

For 4k for myself I would go with this diamond if its eye clean and there are a lot of different solitaire settings around.
From the basic tiff replica to the x and u prong styles.

You can go down in clairity if you want size and somethings you can deal with. You can go to an SI1 and have it look like a VS2. Somethings you can be easy on and others you cant. Cut is one of those you should stick to your guns on. The cut of the stone is what peopel notice. However, somethings people like and dont like. Florencence for example. I like it, some don''t. Its up to you. I would look for some other stones to compare it too. Whats your timeline?

first thanks everyone for the help. My timeline is about two months so I am not in a mad rush, my biggest problem however is i live in Germany. This is a problem because diamond engagement rings are not exactly a norm here they are still catching on and it is very hard to find good qaulity diamonds in house everyone says they can order them. So getting to see good quality diamonds on hand is tricky. (Some of you online retailers should really translate your site into german you have much better selection than they have here.)

I visited tiffany''s here but they are just to expensive for the name, not to mention that the euro is about 28% higher than the dollar, making the purchase in the states a better option. I am traveling there any way and can pick it up from a family member when i am there.

Here is another something I am considering sticking to cut and sacrificing a little on the size please let me know what you all think.

Carat weight: 0.85
Cut: Ideal
Color: H
Clarity: VS1
Depth %: 62.1%
Table %: 54.8%
Symmetry: Ideal
Polish: Ideal
Girdle: Medium to slightly thick
Culet: Pointed
Fluorescence: Very strong
Measurements: 6.05 x 6.07 x 3.77 mm

AGS certified

$3260

Again with the fluorescense though please advise

I just read that you are living in Germany. I am a American ex-pat living outside of Munich. We did a search here for diamonds, but the costs were significantly higher than in the states. We ended up traveling home (Chicago) to select a diamond from a wholesaler I had purchased my diamond studs from. It was a long trip, but worth it in the end.

Just one suggestion, make sure that whoever you are using for insurance will cover the ring and any other jewelry that you might have (Chubb does not do jewelry riders over here). We found it quite difficult to get the coverage we needed since a lot of people in Germany do not have large stones.

Good luck.

Strong blue can very rarely make a diamond look oily or milky in some lights but this is very rare indeed. Check with the vendor if you are considering strong blue to make sure it doesn''t have a negative effect on the diamond. You can see strong in sunlight and UV light, the diamond can tend to " glow bluish and have blue sparkles" very pretty in my opinion, however it is a matter of preference. Same applies about it improving colour grades possibly.

Again we need the crown and pavillion angles to help with this diamond, can you post them ?

I only find angles for the second stone they are:

Crown angle: 35
Pavillion angle: 40.7

crown 16,1%
pavillion 42,8%

any other stones you see better or comparable than these please let me know

and thanks for your help

You are welcome. The angles look fine for the second diamond. This could be a beauty, just a tad deeper than I prefer, but it looks good!

The second diamond appears to be well-cut, should be very pretty. It''s a tad on the deep side. The depth isn''t compromising on cut quality, but it will make the diamond appear face up ever so slightly smaller than it''s carat weight. I would ask the vendor whether the very strong blue flor. destracts from the performance of the stone by being milky/cloudy. It probably won''t, but it''s something you should ask.
