SO and I were laying on the couch one night and he asks, "Why do you like such big rocks?"

I was wearing a halo''d ~2ct round stone. We''re not engaged, nor are we really looking at rings at the moment. It does seem to be the popular trend among our friends so it is something that comes up in discussion occassionally. This was a ring I bought for myself. I do wear big jewels. This ring, some family rings, my 3 cttw studs, halo''d 1cttw studs, big watches, big pearls, etc.

I had no answer for him... why do I like bigger stones? I have *no* idea! The bigger the better? I don''t really know. I like the proportions on my hand more?

Anyone been asked this? How''d you answer? Seems so simple but I just don''t know. Because they''re prettier? That''s not right because many smaller rings are *beautiful* and much nicer than rings that are just bigger.

hmm.. I guess because they appeal to you and you like the way they look on you? Sometimes it can be hard to explain our preferences with rationale - they just appeal to us.

+1. It''s like asking why you like your favorite color.

I like that my ring has big and small stones in the same piece - I find the different types of performance fascinating.

I think that's what makes PSers special - we not only love our rocks, big and small, we also care about why they look and perform the way they do. I've met plenty of women who "love" diamonds but couldn't care less about how a diamond behaves... I confess, with those women I'm more likely to think they like big rocks because they're status symbols.

It''s just a personal preference! Like music, or food. No real *reason*, KWIM?

I am curious as to whether he think you would only consider wearing bigger stones, or is just genuinely interested in your taste.

How ''bout "Because I''m materialistic & if you''re worried about that I guess you cannot afford me!" That would have stopped him in his tracks.

I have a feeling he was wondering about "showiness" vs "understated" -- how much jewelery does his mom wear? Are you in similar social circles? Sometimes very wealthy people run in a circle that *downplays* their privilege -- where in other circles "the bigger the better". I can think of whole towns that trend one way vs. another.

Has he selected jewelry gifts for you before that you don''t wear? Is he embarrassed by displays of wealth? Is he worried about a possible engagement ring not being up to your standards?

These were definitely my first thoughts as well.

You could ask him why he likes big TV''s or fancy cars (if he does) LOL

It comes down to personal tastes/preferences.
There are many factors that influence our preferences of course but in any case that is what they are. No right or wrong or judgment call should be made about the size ring someone is drawn to.

Just saying...

My reply would be "because I''m nearsighted and the honkers are easier to see!"

Yes, good possibilities. Men don''t tend to ask such questions without another motive I think.

I like big rocks too. I think it looks good.
