Small feather near edge

Hello, I have been lurking for a while, learned a lot, and am finally getting that ring she deserves. I do have two quesions since everyone here seems so knowledgeable about diamons.

The diamond I found has decent clarity at VS2, but the inclusion is a small looking feather at the edge of the diamond. Do you think this could be an issue, and what questions should I ask the seller? I included a picture from the GIA cert.

My other question is that the diamond wasn''t rated that well for cut - yet gets a really good score on the HCA - 1.2. The diamond is 1.3/H/VS2 good cut, good symmetry, and good polish.

I wouldn''t worry about the inclusion. You can always ask if it is eye clean to be absolutely sure, but it''s so tiny and that picture is so huge that you''ll probably have trouble finding it with a loupe!

As far as the specs and cut goes, I''ll let someone else answer...

If the diamond cutter is going to take the time to finish the work, ie. "good" polish grading isn't very "good" compared to what it could and should be, I wouldn't take the time to make the money to buy the diamond... Just a thought!

Whilst I generally prefer inclusions on the side rather than in teh middle of the table, whether the feather is a concern depends on whether it is open or closed. Open feathers near the edge can be a cause for concern as they can grow if they take a hard impact or constant pressure from a prong.

You can ask your vendor to clarify.

Personally, I wouldn''t mind the inclusion but I will give this diamond a miss due to its depth...There should be better ones around...

Like Rob, I am also questioning why the polish is only good, isn''t it possible to finish the stone polish it better?

As far as the depth goes, it does appear quite shallow, so I am probably sacrificing brilliance, but it should look much larger then its carat weight, right? This is not a recommended trade off?

No. Especially since this diamond will be leaking light under the table and at the edges. In fact, a smaller diamond cut well enough to return light from edge-to-edge will actually appear larger than this one. Compare this selection to a well-cut diamond away from store spotlights - in indirect light - and it will be quickly apparent.

Another reality check: Based on the measurements given this diamond is predicted to earn AGS6 in light performance. A "good" cut grade from GIA is not a very robust mark.

Basically it''s never good to give up cut!!! Cut is king and impacts greatly how a diamond will look compared to other things like color and clarity.
