Hi everyone! I'm curious if you guys have any recommendations for a nice low-profile hardshell ring box? My gf and I are taking a trip and I'm going to propose while we are there but it won't be until a couple days in. I'd like to keep the ring tucked away in my backpack but need something slim so that it's not obvious if she happens to look inside.
It doesn't have to be a nice display piece just something that will do a good job of protecting the ring without the obvious ring box bulge. Thanks!
I wasn't sure what section this should go under so please feel free to move if it's better suited under a different forum.

Nice idea. Makes me nervous. Is the ring insured?

@Inert Maybe keep the ring in the regular presentation box, but roll it up into a pair of socks (like how you’d tuck one sock inside the other). If you’re going on a hike, it might not be outside the realm of ‘normal’ to have an extra pair of socks in a backpack to raise suspicions.

Good luck & congrats on your pending engagement! :appl::wavey:

Wow, nice finds @MollyMalone! Those boxes are super cool!
Very exciting, @Inert!! What did you decide to do about the white vs. yellow prongs?

I've not checked Molly's recommendations but there was a cool super-slim 'travel box' posted in a thread recently - I think it was a thread discussing Brian Gavin Black diamonds' presentation boxes being cardboard instead of wood??

FWIW I wrapped a ring in a couple of sheets of tissue paper then sandwiched it between credit cards held securely together with strong rubber bands, so I could protect it and keep it in my (deep, secure) jeans pocket at all times, rather than have it in a bag that could get stolen.

Going through airport security you can place it in the tray without raising your partner's suspicion (especially if it's within a wallet) and without risk of discovery if they search your bag and pull everything out on the table. You can still keep a ring box in your bag, but in the bottom in a sock, or perhaps zipped into a bulky coat - and in the worst case scenario of it being pulled out, it's empty and you could say you were planning to ask your partner to go ring shopping while away (then surprise them on the first night before you have opportunity to look for anything) :)

I would be hesitant to put it in a backpack. Backpacks can be stolen, or like in my case cut into. I was travelling in India and was on the bus, I felt some movement in pushing behind me I just turned away and thought nothing of it. When I sat down, I realise someone had cut my rucksack backpack open and had stolen my camera - at the beginning of my 3 month holiday. I was broken. Can’t imagine what that would feel like if it was an engagement ring. If at all possible, keep it on your person. And insure it before you go

There are loads on Etsy! Affordable too.

If everything goes to plan, we will probably be on the beach in swim suits when I do pop the question so the big ring box would just be way too noticeable.

Here are possibilities for you (not sure what style you're hoping for or what your budget might be):

Some of these are also sold via Amazon, so you could check out the reviews there.

Thank you!! I will take a look at all of these and report back!

I'm not too worried about keeping it in my backpack. (Hopefully I don't come back to regret saying that!) The problem with keeping it in my pocket at the airport is that then it definitely has to come out during security vs. just maybe if its in the backpack and gets searched. We're also going to a warmer temperature beach climate so the big coat pocket won't really work either.

I'll have my backpack on me pretty much the whole time except for one day towards the beginning of the trip when we are doing a cave excursion. For that I'll just have to hide it well inside my suitcase at our hotel. Hopefully I'm not over simplifying all this! Thank you for the tips and heads up!

I ended up going with Platinum and I love it! It looks amazing! I'll try to post some pictures when I can get my hands on a decent camera.

Just make sure it is covered under your home insurance for all risks/losses, including theft and 'mysterious loss' (or however it is described), as well as being covered Worldwide for all risks - ring them to ask if it needs a specific rider policy/premium, as many have limitations to value of individual items.

Also make sure to provide them with details of your purchase in terms of quality - i.e. if it is a 'brand name' SuperIdeal with an AGS report number, which often includes the specific branding on the certificate (e.g CBI or WF ACA), make sure to tell them and provide the evidence if they require it. Otherwise, if something happens and it is lost/stolen, they might say 'but this 62 table, 65 depth, 31% crown diamond is the same carat weight as yours, so what's the problem?' lol

Does the hotel have a safe? I would take no chances: as the insurance may not cover it if it’s nit secured in a safe when left at the hotel

I had to save the Blistex container because I’m a sentimental sap. I store my Halloween vampire fangs in there :rodent:
