In the thread in Brides where someone asked how to pronounce FI...you wrote

"I know I am nerdy, but when I am not sure I look things up in the dictionary". ~the skippy

I have to tell you in a long distance (this is by far the safest distance) phone conversation with my mother...she is constantly flipping through pages while you (not you...I mean whomever she is talking to) is speaking...guess what the pages are? A freakin dictionary!! Heaven help you if you slip up at any time. She will bite you in the butt.

Websters pronounces sewage as sewage...not SUE AAGE....arggghhhh! There are a few words I seem to take liberties with...when they sound disgusting...I try to make them more attractive. We have never actually had a conversation about sewage...I am just using that as an example.

There is a place my good friend lives...Olathe Kansas. I have heard it Olathe...and Olatha...but I have learned to just say where Boo Boo lives. Surely she has hand entered Olathe for quick reference-ouch she has caught me too often.

Would you like my Mums number? Sounds as if you and she could carry on well with one another.

But only on that one aspect. And it is a teeny tiny crumb...in the grand scheme of the wonder of her!

That second icon...is ironically my momma. That is too funny. You get the best little smileys eva....(ok websters has ever spelled with an e and an r not an a) Arrrggghhhh!

Funny. My middle one was not a good speller. One day, when he was probably 9 or 10, he said, "Mom, how are you supposed to look up a word in the dictionary when you don''t know how to spell it"?

Think about it, if you aren''t close, you''re lost.

I think they should list the word first the way someone who can''t spell would guess at it, the way it''s pronounced. Then give the correct spelling.

But, Merriam-Webster has not consulted me on it.

true true. I am horrible about spelling so I love yahoo because I spell how I think it should be and it auto corrects, sometimes right sometimes wrong but it helps me out a lot!

I never correct people (outside of my classroom) when they make errors, but add me to the conference call with Skippy and your mom, DKS! I LOVE words. LOVE THEM.

When I was little I used to carry a little paperback Webster''s Dictionary and highlight interesting words when I heard them in conversation. I''m not kidding. I also used to scrawl delicious words all over the pages of my "word notebook" in college. I still have that notebook, it''s actually a personal treasure of mine. Thank goodness I ''m also athletic, which somehow translates to "cool" in kidspeak--otherwise, I would have spent my childhood years being stuffed into lockers.

Alas, I am a word-nerd. I even have the Word Nerd website on my list of browser favorites. I called the first website I ever developed "Wordsmith". I''m the only teacher who volunteers to teach etymology. I collect beautiful lettering designs, and calligraphy. I love letters and the words they make together. Words make me tick.

Phew. I''m glad I got that off my chest. I feel much better now. Anyone want to attend the next Word-Nerds Anonymous meeting with me? It meets in the local library every Thursday night at 8.

LOL!!

My oldest would. He loves words, and honestly, he "reads'' his dictionary. My other two don''t stand a chance at Scrabble with him.

Deb and Haven, you lady's are adorable, I would want to join you too because I wish I was better at spelling and this would excite me because I want to do better. I enjoy looking at the word of the day online or if I hear something I never heard before I look it up to try and learn more.
