Fascinating! And yes, I see why the top ring would bring to mind MZ's beautiful spess.
Apparently this young woman also had two gold bracelets and a pair of gold earrings next to her body...

Hey, wait a minute.
How did one ring move to a different finger before she was even dug out of the ground?
Also, isn't that bone in the first pic not even the finger, rather the bone in the hand itself?
I smell a photoshop job.

The story floating around is that the rings were found near the remains and placed on her hand for the photograph.

But only the top of the hand had been exposed.
The rest had not been dug out yet, so how could they slide a ring on?
If they placed the rings there for the pic they would have had to cut the bottom of the rings off.
Plus bones for two extra fingers are exposed on the second pic.

Good eye! I know nothing about photoshop, anyone care to do some detective work with me? It could be a hoax, but it seems like a fairly strange and obscure thing to concoct. Pompeii is so fascinating, I would love to get the real scoop.

I believe the Pompeii victims of Mt. Vesuvius in died from inhalation of ash/smoke/toxin rather than contact with lava.
So the gold may not have been exposed to its melting temperature, nearly 2000 degrees F.

bband those other gold items look to have been placed there too, now that I think of it... I couldn't figure out why someone who was caught in this situation unawares would have been curled around their gold jewelry.
As I understand it, Pompeii was not buried in lava, but in ash.

The gold would stand more heat than the stones. The bones might outlive the gold but only because there would have been plenty of organic matter around it to isolate it from the heat.
The position of the bangles could indicate that they were in a pouch or something but someone really moved those rings - naughty and very bad science. The original position was probably registered before they were moved but it makes the dig seem more worried about publicity than precision.
Roman gold used in jewelry was usually between 75% and 99% gold, so between 18k and 24k. 24k wasn't very common, because of softness issues.

I wouldn't doubt that the rings were adjusted for the photo.
But the later photo with the great, clear shot of the rings on the hand was clearly photo shopped.
