if my g/f is a size 8 3/4s and her ring is an 8 1/2, how hard is it to size it up. I've read various things about whether it's easier to size up or down.

Usually sizing is pretty easy. You cut open the ring at the bottom center, either remove or insert a pice as needed, and weld it all back together again. It costs more to go up because there are 2 welds and occasionally the cost of the piece is significant but most jewelers are prepared to go either direction with little trouble.

And, has she tried on the ring yet? With just a 1/4 size difference, it may be that the ring will fit just fine - it depends on the width and thickness of the ring shank and whether it is comfort fit. On my ring finger, I can comfortably wear a size 6.25 (2mm shank) up through a size 7 (7mm comfort-fit band). Plus, the size may fit just right when paired with a wedding band (if it will be). And, between winter and summer, finger size can easily float between a 1/4 size difference. The only other caveat is if the shank has engraving or milgraine or diamonds/gemstones all around the shank, that will affect whether a band can be easily sized or not.
