hello all! i am new to this website, but i really need some advice. i have fallen in love with an estate eternity ring, but unfortunately it is one size too small (it is a 4 1/2 and i wear a 5 1/2). i was wondering if there is a way to size it up, maybe by shaving some platinum off of the inside? i''m posting a pic for reference.

thanks so much!

I thought eternity bands couldnt be resized. Maybe someone else will chime in.

You can size an eternity band a little by shaving some metal from the inside (I actually just did this with a ring), but the key words are "a little": there just isn''t that much additional depth inside most eternity bands. You can generally go up a quarter size that way, but a full size? I doubt it. It''s hard to tell from the picture: if you have any shots of the inner band that might help, but I think your best bet would be to take the ring to a jeweler, if you have it in your possession, to get a professional opinion.

Agreed...most likely not going to happen.

Of course, it coulds be made a size larger, but no matter how it is done it will not be "perfect". There are bound to be some visible signs of the sizing piece added in. You could leave the piece solid and keep it at the bottom. You could possibly make it to add diamonds or sapphires, but it will be a bit visible where this is inserted no matter what. The pattern will be changed, too.

Shaving off the inside is possible if the sapphires don''t go too close to your skin. you can easily shave off the bottom of the sapphires doing this, so have some expert do it and be sure to remind them not to do any damage to any of the diamond or sapphires culet areas.

I have a similar question... I hope you don''t mind if I ask it here. Can a band with diamonds only going half way around be sized?

I bought an estate sapphire eternity about 6 months ago in a size 7.5 when I am a size 7.75 - 8. I talked with my jeweler before buying it and he said that because the ring was so thin (2.5 mm), thus not deep at all, he probably wouldn''t be able to shave off more than a quarter of a size. In the end, the ring fit perfectly--most likely due to how thin the ring is as well as the fact that decades of wear had "flattened" it a little bit, making it easier to go over my knuckle. I just made sure that the estate dealer had a great return policy so that I could bring it to my jeweller and have him assess it in person.

Bottom line: I think having it sized up a whole size would be difficult, but if there is a good return policy you could order it and take it to a trusted jeweller who would be able to assess it.

BTW, musincy, half eternities can be sized. I''ve had 2 half eternities--one was sized down which caused the prongs to open up and one of the stones came out (the jeweller just remade the ring for me from scratch in my size) and the other was sized up and I haven''t had any issues with it at all.

thanks so much for sharing your knowledge and advice! looks like i''m going have to pass on the estate ring and buy a new one instead. thanks again!
