sizing question on shared prong eternity ring (I am going nuts!)

Hi all,
Hubby and I upgraded my old channel set eternity ring to a new one:

a prong set eternity with 1.50 carats. My old ring was a size 6 and bothered me in it''s tightness on hot days and when I woke up in the morning. I like to wear my rings looser, and that is why I like eternity rings, as it does not matter if they spin. The jeweler seems to think that a 6.50 will be too big on me and I will lose it. He says the 6 is a tiny bit tight, but not significantly so (I can still get it off fairly easily, it just bothers me to have it on in hot weather). As a compromise I chose a 6.25 ring, but I called him today to see if there was still time to switch it to a 6.50--he said yes, but again said it would be too big for me.

I am so confused! Yes, I can easily put on and off a size 6, but I like having a loser ring. Will I notice enough difference with a 6.25? I tried on a 6.50 in the store and it did not fall off me, but I could take it on and off easily, and I could see why the jeweler thought it was too big.

What would you all suggest? Stick with the 6.25 or go up to a 6.50? I guess I also worry about getting older and having it get tight, too. Right now I am 41, 5''5 and 145 pounds. The other issue is that I did gain about 10 pounds in the last year which is unusal for me, but I think that may have contributed to the tight ring issue.

Well, to me it sounds like a 6.25 will be just right. If you really like it loose and you are sure that a 6.5 won''t fall off, then you can go with that. But I think the 6.25 is the way to go. What about a 6 3/8? Some jewelers can do this.

I just had an eternity band made and I had it made a 5.5+, which is just a smidge larger than a 5.5. See if they can be more flexible with the size.

How about going with a 6.25 Full. Meaning it will be slightly bigger than a 6.25???

My ering is 5.5, in warm weather (or when I''m bloated) it is very snug. When it is cold, it is very loose. When I got an eternity band (each stone 3pts) i had them make it 5.75. Just large enough if my finger swells. I have another size 6 ring and wear it on the same finger, it is looser and tends to spin. So I would guess, going half a size larger may be too much.

If you feel safer to get a 6.5, you can ask to put a copy of sizing beads to size it down., and remove them if the ring gets tighter in the future.

Take the expert advice of the jeweler and get the 6.25 size. It can be altered to 6.5 later if needed. Most people do get larger over time, so it might be considered part of the process. However, just like clothing, it looks best when it fits. When the time comes to alter the size, then don''t fret, just re-size it.

I have a shared prong eternity band that I thought could not be sized, but rather had to be completely remade. How would they size it? "Scrape" platinum from the inside to make it bigger?

I think Mara had that done to her rings. They were able to size them up about 1/4 size.

The eternity band sizing question in a tough one. I''d probably go for a 6.25 full as K suggests.

I am a 4.25, and I can tell you that a quarter size does make a world of difference. I can get a 4 on and off, but it''s snug. A 5 felt way too big.

I see you are in California. If you are in SoCal, (I think they may have them in NoCal too) go check out Robbins Brother''s. They have sizing rings in quarter increments, which is hard to find in regular jewelers. You may have to insist or ask them...I went in 3 times before someone told me they actually had the quarter sizing rings!

Thank you all for your advice. I am in California--but in Northern California (Bay Area). The jeweler are working with is Simayof. They made my channel set eternity 3 years ago, so we are trading up with them. This new ring has not only more diamonds, but the diamonds are better quality, so they sparkle much more--which now that I know more about diamonds, that is key!

I tried on a size 7 shared prong eternity ring there in the shop, which was obviously huge on me. We are building my ring after that model, but in my size (6.25). They do thankfully make the quarter sizes, so that is not an issue.

We could not have sized my channel set ring--and that is why we are upgrading. This ring also cannot be sized (according to Simayof) so that is why I am biting my nails over the size issue. The think is, this upgrade is costing us a pretty penny--and I hate the thought of doing that again a few years from now because my ring feels too tight. Then again, a ring looks strange when it is huge on your finger--especially an eternity ring. So that is my dilemma.

It seems like most of you would advise me to go for the 6.25. I also hope that is the size I will actually get--sometimes I feel like it is such a small amount that it would easy for them to just give me a 6 and call it a day. Maybe I am just paranoid, but I wonder about that.

Besides all of that I am very thrilled about getting my new ring. It looks very similar to the picture I posted. Platinum shared prong eternity-- 1.50 ct. and better color and clarity than my last eternity. I saw someone here who had a ring that looked like it--Mrssalvo (I have been looking at all of the eternity band threads for the past month). I loved her ring and went looking for one like that. It is very classic and simple, but I like that.

The only other issue is that I have been having nightmares (literally--I have had 3 since we ordered the ring!) that I lost the ring. I am nervous because this ring will be worth about 5,000.00 (which I know is not that much considering how much people usually pay for their e-rings and wedding bands!) and I am worried I will misplace it somehow. I spent 15 years of our marriage with a plain gold band, and never lost that--but I never have been one to have expensive jewelry. I am sort of a free spirit--and am not the type who has lots of pricey things to keep track of. I know we can insure it and we will do that.

I have heard about eternity bands being cut with a laser and then put back together at a bigger or smaller size. I inquired to WF about this when they were making my ring and I was told it can be done but that "the ring is never the same afterwards."

Simayof may not want to offer a re-size on the ring and so is putting a lot of responsibility on you. The ring CAN be sized 1/4 or 1/2 size larger by a competent jeweler later on. Maybe SImayof is more interested in selling than servicing customers. That''s what it sounds like, but maybe they are great people and you are just not meeting their best salesperson. Speak with the store manager privately and voice your sizing concerns. The manager might even agree to re-size it 1/4 size larger later on for free if you still have a problem. Many people have fingers that swell periodically and no single size always is comfortable. You will have to live with it, if such is the case.
