I''ve posted a few times now on recutting my steep deep stone, in which I can see the ring of death in some lighting. My fiance was fine with the idea at first, but now doesn''t want me to do it for fear it will break. I have it in a simple white gold cathedral setting which I love, but was wondering if putting it in a four prong head rather than six would allow more light to pass through it. I clean my ring OBSESSIVELY because I know dirt on these stones makes them more see through, but would changing to four prongs help also? I know the more light that goes through it the better, but don''t know if this would really make a difference or not. I figured some of you guys would know. Thanks in advance!

Unless you are constantly viewing your ring from the side rather than top view, I don''t think it will make much of a difference. If you already love your setting I would keep it.

I agree--keep the setting if you love it. Two more prongs won't make much difference

Did you discuss the chances of the diamond breaking with a cutter? It might not be that big a risk. After all, it already survived being cut once.

Thanks for the input! I did talk to Brian Gavin about it, and he said he would of course look at it first and let me know how risky he thought it would be. I was fine to do that except that I haven''t been able to say goodbye to it long enough to send it to Texas! Then my fiance decided he didn''t want me to do it. For now I''m ok with that. If a few years go by and it still bugs me, I''ll bring it up again. If I did happen to be the lucky one whose diamond breaks, right now there is NO way we could come even close to replacing it. Plus my fiance seems to be very sentimental about the stone, even though I picked it and practically gave it to myself!

If your fiance is sentimental about the stone, why not slowly save up over time to get another ring to wear as a RHR someday? If you aren''t going to do a re-cut I''d keep everything for now and save up money.

Thanks kcoursolle! I am actually thinking of (in time) buying a superideal cut, but smaller and lower in color diamond for either a pendant or RHR so that I can see the difference before I think about recutting again. I always hear going low in color/clarity is fine for pendant stones anyway, and a k-m si half carat (with strong fluorescence too) is actually pretty do-able. It would be fun to have the two to compare. My e-ring is 1.44 I vs2. This diamond addiction is dangerous though! The more I learn, the more I want to buy!

Here''s my take on the sentimentality: it''s still the same stone! It''s not like you''re trading it in for a completely different one. I think recutting a stone is a wonderful way to keep the sentimental value while making it more beautiful. It''s large enough that you have plenty of room to work with, and it will sparkle so much more when it''s done. I say go for the recut!

jstarfireb--- I completely agree with you on the sentimentality thing! That will be my arguement should I choose to bring it up in the future

And Brian said it may only lose around five% of its weight, so it sounds great to me. But at least for now I can let it go. I spent the day at a local beach today and am convinced I couldn''t change a thing about my stone. The leakage that bugs me in places with no overhead lighting actually makes for some AWESOME patterning in the sun! I look into my stone and all I see are eight perfect arrows, I guess the leakage is occurring in between them and makes them stand out so beautifully. I know I didn''t pick the very best diamond, but there are things I just love about it and I get compliments on it constantly, from people I don''t even know. Recutting it will be in the back of my mind, but I am realizing there''s no rush. I got it in March (right before I learned about crown and pavilion angles
