single stem flower as BM bouquet

I read in an article that one way to cut cost is to have BMs hold a single stem flower - like long stemmed rose or a calla lily. I''ve only been to one wedding who used 1 calla lily and it looked classy.

Are there brides here who are thinking or have done this? Can you share some photos please? Do you think it will look nice if I used a single rose for my BMs?

Honestly I''m having a hard time visualizing that it seems a bit odd to me. If you saw it done with a calla lily though and it looked good, it''s worth testing out.

I carried 6 long-stem calas and my bm carried 3. The photos aren''t great, because the florist added weird leaf filler. But, I highly recommend the 3. And recently, I carried 3 sunflowers in a friend''s wedding. Frankly, I wouldn''t do 1 just because you want your BM to have enough of stem to hold on to and 1 seems a little awkward since it would be so thin. But if you''ve seen it and like it, why not??

One way to test this out is go to a crafts store and try different numbers of fake calas - you can really get a pretty decent feel for the fullness/width of the bouqet.

hey- I did this for my BMs, I had white Calla Lilly and a single Yellow rose with it. It turned out beautiful I'll need to find a picture of how it looked. not sure if i have any digital pictures but I can scan to show, but I also had some greenery with it.

I had wanted to do this for my girls before I really had a concrete plan for what flowers I was going to use. Not only to cut back on costs, but because I HATE the look of bouquets. They just are so......dome-like. My girls bouquets will be made up of daisies and other small filler flowers, but I specifically asked my florist to make them very natural, organic, and asymetrical. My florist used the term "whispy". I think that a single flower would look very nice, and simple. The right flower with the right accessories/dresses can make a statement in itself. Sometimes less is best!

My best friend had her two attendants carry just one cala with an incredibly long stem with some poofy ribbon tied on. I thought it looked really nice. Another friend suggested a single gerbera daisy which I am considering but not sold on. I think I am going to stick with my 3-5 stems of gladiolus blossoms.

Just a word of caution- sometimes a single flower looks awkward in pictures. Think about how you would want the girls to hold the flower for pictures, without it looking too posed.

I have seen the single calla lilly before... It''s nice but not my style... Another great way to save money is to use the bridemaids bouquets as flower arragements during the reception. For example, I had 5 bridesmaids, and after we finished the ceremony and pictures, they put them in vases the florist supplied, and we used them to decorate the cake table during the reception (see picture below).

Also - another flower that looks great in just a few stems are peonies (fully blown).

A single calla lily would be beautiful and elegant. I have seen something like that and it looked great. You could add some wrapped and trailing ribbons to it too and maybe some greenery.

I prefer the single lily to a single rose.

To be 100% honest, it looks lacking and like you are trying to save money. Sorry.

That said, I am happy to be proven wrong if anyone has pictures, but all the ones I have seen were disappointing.

I think one flower is acceptable for the mother of the bride/groom. I''ve never seen this look in the bridal party so my opinion is skewed. BUT, I think 3 calla lilies in a bouquet for your BM would look classy. You can also dress this look up with ribbon, etc.

I carried a single long stem red rose with the other bridesmaids at my cousin''s wedding. As others have said, it didn''t photograph particularly well. I do think that a calla would look nicer.

I would suggest picking an inexpensive flower and using that for the bridesmaids or picking a large, single flower like hydrangea. Daisies, mums, stock, carnations are pretty inexpensive if you want to do a fuller bouquet. If you want to go with the single rose or calla, I''d suggest sourcing the biggest, longest stem you can find to avoid looking cheap. I''ve seen yellow calla lilies matched with long, sleek magenta BM dresses while the bride carried a bouquet of only magenta callas. If you wanted to, you could see how they might have saved a good bit of money on the flowers, but it was the early 2000s and the minimalistic look was still in vogue enough for the whole thing to look purposefully orchestrated. The whole decor matched the sleek scheme too, so i think that helped.

I had a full bouquet for my religious wedding, but for my civil wedding used a single hydrangea stem (albeit with three large bloom chunks that were round enough to look like a medium-sized monotone bouquet). I think it was pretty perfect for the no-frills cream mini dress I picked out, especially after the stem was wrapped with thick, wide (read: expensive looking) satin ribbon. I think it didn''t look too bad in the pictures; I''ll see if I can dig up any pictures of it when I get home.

Whatever you do, just be very sure that it''s a look that you won''t regret later as I feel the single stem for BMs might look a bit dated when you see that album some years down the road.

I went to a wedding where the BM carried 3 roses. I think it looked really funny IMO. But thats bc it was just the flowers, no decorations, ribbon, filler.....

I was a BM at a wedding where all the BMS had a single calla lily. The stem was wrapped in gold ribbon. I thought it looked skimpy and awkward, but I never said anything. Whatever. Different people have different tastes.
