I am in the process of getting a stone reset in a custom setting. This will be a RHR.

My size 6 wedding band is snug on RH but better on LH
My size 6 1/4 wedding ring is a bit loose on LH but just right on RH
My size 7 RHR (band) spins most times but varies from super loose to just right depending on the weather and my ever fluctuating hormones

. On the LH it''s super duper loose. (BTW, do most people have one hand bigger than the other or am I a freak of nature?

)

Here lies my dilemma. I told my jeweller to tell the ring maker to make the new ring a size 7. Now I am second guessing myself and should of asked to have it made a 6 1/2 (I think - not even sure of that).

1. Is it too late to tell the ring maker to change the size (I think he/she started yesterday or today)?
2. As we age, do our ring sizes get bigger or smaller (this is the silly question I have)?

I like the look of rings that spin a bit and look a bit loo se rather than tight but I don''t want to be loosing my ring in a few years from now doing the Macarena at one of my childrens''s wedding.

What would you do? What size would you go with?

Thanks for your help.

I'd go with a 6 1/4 or 6 1/2 - as that seems to be the actual size of the finger it is going on??? Is this to be an unsizeable ring (ie. eternity), and that is why you are erring on the big side?

Most people have their dominant hand bigger than non-dominant. (I'm even but that seems to be an exception.) Most people have their finger size go up if they put on weight, are pregnant, or get arthritic big knuckles. These things usually correlate with age. Some people stay the same ring size their whole lives.

ETA: Call now to ask about sizing. Jeweler will know if it is changeable, not peanuts on the internet.

I would go 6 1/2 if you like a little big - a size 7 is going to put you at risk to fling your ring off when you do that macarena

I have a ring that is about 3/4 size bigger than it should be that I never got sized down like I should have and it has literally flown off my hand when not even doing the macarena (on more than one occasion!) - especially when it is cold!

First, let me say I can totally relate to your dilemma!!! It is not silly at all.

It seems to me if a 6.25 fits just right on RH, that sounds like the right size to me. Size 7 seems a bit big.
ETA: Actually 6.5 might be just right, given what you said.

There are so many factors to consider. Is this going to be a band, or a top-heavy ring? A band is more forgiving, and spin doesn't matter so much, while on a top-heavy ring (e.g. a solitaire w/ diamond set high), excessive spin would drive me crazy.

How wide is the ring? I find that different widths of rings fit differently.

Is there any open space under the ring? e.g. My DH's aunt gave me a ring that has a bunch of diamonds on top (just metal band on back half), but I noticed that it fits pretty well on my RH, which is hard to do, and then I realized, the diamonds are all set up a little, leaving like a little "alcove" underneath, for lack of a better way to describe it, which I think allows it to get over my knuckle.

Also, as others said, it is not weird at all for 2 hands to be different. My LH rings are about size 5.25 (for a thin band; needs to be bigger for wider band), while my LH would need a 6.5 at least to get over the knuckle. Both hands are probably more like a size 4.5 - 5 at the ring part. Incidentally, my new reset has a hinged shank, so that it can fit correctly on my RH, since the knuckle is about 2 sizes bigger than the ring area. But that's an expensive option that you probably don't need.

I hope some of this helps. I feel like starting a thread, someday when I have time, about sizing issues like this.

p.s. I would probably call the jeweler right away to finalize this issue. Maybe he/she can help you decide what is the best size?

Thanks for your imput Cara!!

No, it isn''t an eternity. It will be sizable (it should be) Just hope it''s not too late to change it...
I''m done having kids so that should help!!
I''ll have to wait until the morning to call. I''m in Ontario and the ring was sent to Vancouver. Besides, my jeweller has the contact info for the ring maker. I don''t think he would appreciate a late night call from a overwrought client!

:)
You''re right about the cold - oversized rings could be considered lethal weapons up were I live!!!

I''d go with 6 1/2. My ring size stayed the same for about 25 years! It was not until putting on a few pounds at middle age did I need to size my rings a little larger.

I''d go with a 6.5.
