Sight Unseen Purchase - Advice

Hi All,

Been lurking for quite awhile and am ready to pull the trigger on an online diamond purchase. My first diamond purchase ever. This will be used in a platinum solitaire setting.

I've found a diamond that scores well, 0.7 (too well?), using the HCA tool. GIA cut is excellent, but I don't know what people mean when they say 'excellent x3'.

Unfortunately idealscope isn't available, which although I admit I can't read well, was a requirement for me to buy online.

Any advice or opinions on this rock would be helpful, any reasons to stay away?

Thanks for all the help this forum has already provided!

Ugh, I am sorry to rain on your parade, but that diamond has a very, very low crown angle. In fact, it is one of the lowest I have ever seen. And crown height is only 13%. This is a fairly flat top stone. You can just do much better than this. This is not a diamond I would consider sight unseen (or seen for that matter).

XXX means excellent cut, polish and symmetry.

Here are some guidelines to help you choose one of the better excellent cuts:

table: 54-58

depth: 60-62.3

crown angle: 34.0-35.0

Pavilion angle: 40.6-41.0

I'll see if I can find anything close to those specs but better cut.

Thank you for the help Diamond Seeker, I'm using your guidance to narrow the search.

I also appreciate you recommending those diamond, but i'd really like to find one on bluenile due to a setting they offer.

How does the PS community feel about the diamond below? again this is for a solitaire setting. 0.9 HCA, but on the low side of the recommended table?

This one has much better proportions however we still do t know how it handles light and BN cant give you that info. Which setting are you considering?

Hi Christina, I believe I may have responded very prematurely as white flash offers many settings that are very similar. The one I Am considering is a 4 prong solitaire 1.85 mm wide platinum.

I can't seem to get onto the WF website this morning but does anyone know how quickly they can ship a ring set?

I will reconsider the options suggested by diamond seeker now that I have gotten past my naive view that BN was the only way to go. Any of them you preferChristina?

Thank you!

WhiteFlash will have better options. I see that their site appears to be down at the moment. I think they can set a ring pretty quickly if it is something they have in stock.

Any opinion on the second BN one linked above? Are you concerned at all with the low table of the first one?

I might just order one of those two and return if it doesn't handle the light well (bring it to an independent expert to make that call?)

Ok, unless anyone has any other comments I'm going with the $8833 one recommended by DiamondSeeker, thank you!

Done.

Thanks for all the help!

Went with the basic 4 prong solitaire at WF.

Outstanding choice!!! You can feel assured that you got a top cut quality stone! :appl:

I think you made an excellent choice as well! Congrats and I'm looking forward to seeing pics!!
